Now that the cycle is over for most of us, I want to talk about the most important aspect of choosing a school: the free stuff programs hand out when you interview. What stood out to you? For me the best were:

University of Iowa: Best preinterview dinner by a mile. I had the best steak I’ve ever had. They also gave me a really nice thermos. Cons: A huge insect attacked me Pros: the program director saved me by stabbing it with his salad fork which was pretty cool.

WashU: gave us a really nice leather folio with the itinerary in it Pro/Con: it says ‘Washington University MSTP’ in big letters. Maybe you could tape over it if you attend another school

The Ohio State: we weren’t allowed to buy drinks at the dinner... but one of the students bought me a couple beers. Pros: coolest students Cons: I got rejected so maybe it was a secret test of character?

Did any of your "Interview Loot" influence where you decided to attend?

Stony Brook gave me a microfiber cloth for cleaning my glasses lenses that has a little plastic envelope it stays in to keep it clean. Nothing fancy obviously, but very practical and I carry it with me in my bag everywhere I go now.
