Welp, lets hear it. Who had any good/bad experiences? Come on I want to hear some good ones.

My boss and co-workers tried multiple times to get accepted to dental school and didn't make it. Became worst job ever after getting accepted, gey le douche.

EDIT:: Ok, due to lack of responses lets change the rules. If you have ever quit a job, FOR ANY REASON AT ALL, tell us about it. Did you go out in a bang? Did you or anyone around get injured during your leave? Did it turn in to a childish situation?

Everyone congratulated me, but my supervisor turned into a slavedriver. Friday is my last day.

this wasn't before dental school but it was my first job before i knew what a 2 week notice was (i was 15). i went up to my boss and i was like

"yeah... this is my last day. i can't work anymore after this."

he responded, "just like that? you aren't going to give me a 2 week notice?"

i said, "a 2 week notice"

he responded, "yeah, usually you should give your boss 2 weeks notice as to find a replacement"

i said, "okay... well in 2 weeks you will notice i haven't been coming to work for 2 weeks"

LOL amazing

I'm giving my notice tomorrow. My boss has known about my dental school plans for sometime. I had to threaten to quit so I could get flextime in order to take some orgo labs. I'm officially giving them a week notice, but I've been training my replacement for 2 months now. It's going to be weird to leave after 7 years on the job, but I'm really looking forward to my new career as a dental student. If only it paid a salary instead of loans!!!

My last day on my last job, I was at a call center--inbound--where ppl call you not vice versa--and I started hanging up on every other customer. I ended up getting fired but hell I had training class the next day for Walmart so I wasnt worried. Besides it gave me a day more to recover from my wisdom teeth removal....which btw, I am doing quite well now.

I love this thread because i am waiting to quit my boring job!! I'm trying to hold out until the end of july...but i don't think I'm going to make it. I work weekends so it has been a real pain!!

At least you guys have jobs. After I found out I got in, I quit my job and have been a bum ever since. I've decided to pretend to be a full-time bodybuilder for the next 2 months. Too bad I'm just small and weak...

As far as job-quitting, I gave a 2 weeks notice and didn't show up the last day. Weak sauce compared to the dude who said, "...well in 2 weeks you will notice i haven't been coming to work for 2 weeks."

And Melissa, just quit. 🙂

Not that I've done this, but on the day you're gonna quit, go in dressed as a clown and bring a boombox playing the "take this job and shove it" country song blaring super loud. Oh yeah, you have to be drunk too.

Hopefully, you'd choose the remix of "take this job and shove it" from Office Space. I think I'd just act out Office Space until I got fired. 😀

Lol that's pretty much what I did for months.......

i would just show up at like 2pm or later every single day......never called to mention I would be late, or if I was not coming in at all. Pretty funny when I would just show up and start working like I hadn't skipped the last entire week of work. You could tell they wanted to say something but they never did because they knew I would just say "oh sorry". A few times I was called from work to see if I was going to go in anytime soon, and I seriously told them "I'm not really feeling the work vibe today" they just acted like everything was okay.

i also work weekends but i'm alternate status...so i guess if i want the satisifaction of quitting i have to find another job...what a pain, then there's also the 2 wks, also a pain.

I went straight to college to dental school. If you were working, would there really be that many people applying to dental school from the exact same job you are working at as well? Not very common.

P.S. I graduate on Saturday. Have fun the next four years ... suckers!

You realize that humor is a part of remaining sane in healthcare right?

For the record I've never quit without giving two weeks notice...but the Office Space thing sure would be fun. Especially gutting a fish on your desk. :meanie:

Um, not when you work in a DENTAL LAB.

I'll be professional with my job, when it's a professional job. Thanks for your input though, I'm glad you took time out of your day to chat with us.

Oh you must be the jack@ss we've been looking for.

Keep your opinions to yourself if your not going to contribute.

Finally.... today's my last day at work.
My job was pretty good and I'm leaving my company on a very good terms (don't know if that matters anymore).
My boss was pretty cool too... I'm taking a few summer classes and for last two weeks, I have only worked about 20 hours/week and got paid for full time, while I was taking classes 😀
I wish I could continue to do that throughout the summer.....

The worst part is that I'm losing all my benefits starting midnight. 😡
well... looking forward to start the school in sept. 👍

I feel horrible.

I actually want to work through the end of this month, and was thinking of giving my 2 weeks notice on June 16th.

Today, my supervisor called me into her office and started complementing me on my work. The next thing I knew, I was promoted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really tried to keep a straight face and not blurt out that I was going to be quitting in about 2 weeks, but couldn't stop thinking about how bad the timing was for this.

I really hate this job so much, and have been counting down to my last day since like... December!!

My boss is usually a huge witch, and would NOT be understanding if I told her I was leaving at the end of the month. If I had told her that today, she would have treated me horribly until the end of the month. She might have even fired me.

So when I heard the "good news", I pretended like I was happy about it. She has no idea that I am going to be a dentist...and I don't know how I'm going to break it to them. I feel like on June 16th, I'm going to get dirty looks from everyone and they're all going to hate me for not letting them know sooner.

What can I tell them when it comes time for me to quit? Is there any excuse for not telling them that I was leaving today, when I got the promotion??

Differing opinions are contributions, and the discussions they promote are a big part of what makes SDN work. Personal attacks against people you disagree with, on the other hand, aren't.

Don't burn bridges if you don't have to...Since I started clinic I have bumped into 2 of my former supervisors. It turns out that they are patients at the school...in any case they can be a great source of referrals.

Yeah I applied the year I graduated so I had a year off. No one would hire me knowing that I was applying to dental school so I ended up getting a job at a sculpture studio. It worked out awesome. My boss was impressed on how someone who spent the last four years working in a bio lab and spending hours studying could just come and sculpt. But since I got accepted in December I only work when I feel like it. I told my boss that I will only work on certain pieces. So I work like 6 hours a week. I will show up for work and realize that I don't want to be there so I'll leave. The problem is that I will call all my friends and they will all be working or studying and so I have just become a beach bum for most the days. Its a killer because school doesn't start for me until July. My boss is pretty cool though so it all works out.

Ok, tell me if this was pretty ****ty (for the employer).

I decided to take a job after interviewing and was supposed to start in 2 weeks. During the time between my interview and my start date, I got a nice little email from NYU informing me of my acceptance. Thus, I decided to turn down the job before my start date, actually the day before, because I knew I would have to quit eventually. My would-be boss wrote me an email informing me that I was 'burning bridges.' I told him that because I was accepted to d-school and I would have quit eventually, I wasn't exactly burning bridges but rather felt I was doing the right thing for myself as well as for him and his organization.

So, my question to you guys is, was I at fault? Did I 'burn any bridges?' I guess I kinda screwed them (or did I not?), but its better than screwing them later by telling them 'I quit' 3 months down the road, right?

I would say he overreacted and that what you did was better than quitting later. He should have been able to contact one of the other interviewees and offer them the position. 3 months later he would surely have to re-interview. They also didn't have to spend any money training you.

Well...this is not the best job quitting story at all... I have worked in a dental office for almost a year. When I turned in my two weeks notice, all I got from my boss was :" ok.thanks." 🙄

Any updates? Did you let them have it?

I work in IT for a large corporation and I put my notice in last week. My boss wished me the best and congratulated me and then offered me a part time/contract position. If any of you have worked in corporate America you'll probably be familiar with this - he doesn't want to replace me because the other 3 remaining people can handle the workload but he wants to just keep the head count so if he ever does want to replace me he won't have to justify it to upper management.

Here's the kicker: If he can push through all the red tape and get it approved I will be getting paid for 4 hours a day whether I work or not to be on call and do after hours stuff, which is almost non existent. So basically I'm getting paid to be a place holder and do next to nothing while I'm in dental school.

Yup. I put in my 2 weeks notice on June 9th. My last day is this Friday. Actually, they didn't fire me...but my immediate supervisor has been very rude to me since I broke the news. She's been extremely critical of my work, and has been making it a point to spend up to 30-40 minutes a day sitting with me, going over my "errors," and thoroughly explaining to me how to avoid them in the future. Keep in mind that I'm not working in a field that's not even remotely close to healthcare. I work in a courthouse.

Excuse me??? I'm leaving in like 3 days. Is this really necessary?? I'm being nice about it and not exploding in her face. I just have to get through the end of the week.

Also, when I told her I was going to go to dental school, her immediate response was: "Oh. You're going to have to wear those plastic face shields because if you don't, you're going to get a disease."

What??? No congratulations...No nothing.

Total witch.

lucky you!! you are done with work!!! My last day will be July 19th and I am counting down the days!!! Then I am off to Chicago for a few days and back to Florida for some days at Clearwater Beach!!!!! Gotta love summer vacations!

Does anyone else work in retail? I have worked at a grocery store and now a hardware store. I have cashiered a long long time. I am so sick of customers that I can't stand it. Anyone else have this experience? I hope patients aren't as bad as retail customers.

I just put in my 2 weeks notice a few days ago, and I am taking July off.

Excellent re-evaluation of your current situation. The "just stop going" idea is much more comical!

I know its kind of immature of me, but I just can't take it anymore. I'm afraid i'm gonna go postal in there.

I gave two MONTHS notice at my job. My last day is August 5th, wohhooo! That day cannot come soon enough. But everyone at work was cool about it and most of them are pretty happy for me. One of my friends there applied to medical last year and didn't get in, so she was pretty happy for me. I hope she gets in this time.

And about retail, man I did the retail thing for almost seven years. Glad I'll never do it again!

2 Months notice!!!! wow.....i was only going to give a week, if even that. My boss is kind of mean and i'm afraid that if i give more than a week's notice, he will tell me not to bother even coming in....but unfortunately, i need the money, so i can't risk it. 🙁

I stopped working months ago yet I still arrive and collect a paycheck. They can't fire me because I am a merit employee so I get paid to surf the internet, watch TV and sleep when I get bored. I ehould be able to pay off most my debt and save some needed cash before I walkout the week before school starts.

What is a merit employee? Or in what context did you mean it in.

PS

A lot of my friends who could not wait to quite their job and get into professional school were the same people b*tching about professional school and wishing they can just have a good paying job that does not come with all the stress.

i am puttin in my notice this friday...my last day will be the 19th. 🙂

I will not miss this job as it does not pay well and is very boring.

OH PLEAAAAAASE... I've got a cushy government job for the summer so I'm not complaining, BUT are you trying to tell me a pre-dent about to start school in the fall working at Burger King doesn't have a right to bitch about his job and be happy when he quits?

People who put in the hard work at more labour intensive jobs in which they don't get treated well are the ones that will EXCEL in dentistry because of their work ethic and persistence.

Sorry, but this mushroom's got it all wrong 🙂

well...i have about 13 working days left at my job...but i can't complain really...i have a truly awesome boss and pretty good co-workers...as for the retail-been there, done that...don't miss it except for the regular good customers i had... i can't wait til i leave though because the next day i'm going to destin for a week 🙂 hope everyone else is having a good summer!
