many people told me (and i kinda agree..) that research exp. is not mandatory for dental schools.

HOWEVER, i do believe nothing will get your professor to know you well - and thus provide you with a good LOR - as doing a research.

now i'm about to graduate in about 9 months and i frankly do not think that's enough time for me to start research. because most professors want minimum of 1 yr commitment. (there are some that are OK with 1 semester + summer or 4 months commitments)

is there any other way, besides dropping by prof's office hours, i can really befriend a professor so i can get a good personal LOR later?

i'm out of ideas so i'm all ears.

thanks guys !

p.s. i'm pre-dental~

Sitting in the front row of your classes and going by office hours is the way I did it -- the professors who wrote my letters still kept in touch with me after taking their course(s) and a few still drop me an email every now and again to see how dental school is going. I would say that's how most people get to know their professors -- there are plenty of students who don't do research and get accepted every year.

Wow mamelons you must be a very personable, friendly person.. to have your professors still drop you an email to check up on you like that.

that's really good for you.

what school do you go to by the way?

oh yeah, thanks for your reply ~ 🙂

I go to UTHSCSA.

UTHSCSA here too...

I did research as an undergrad and I am positive that it helped with my acceptance (UTHSCSA is ranked #4 overall, and #11 worldwide in dental research). It not only gave me something to talk about in the interview, but it also shows interest in academia and not just practice (regardless of what route you are intersted in).

To get in a research group, go talk to the professors after class. They may tell you to ask around in the dept. Do that and then follow up with the research group that most interests you and ask how you can get involved.

Don't be shy... The worst they can say is no.
