would love to hear of some great experiences from DSO’s and why. Just want to see if theres any general trends with certain companies and what to look for in a place.

Look for who's willing to pay you the most and throw as many patients at you as possible (because that's how you're most likely to get paid). Think of yourself as a mercenary.

I've been on both sides of this fence. Practiced privately with 2 locations for 25 years and have worked for a DSO the last 8 years. The question is: "What stage in your dental career are you at?"

New graduate with lots of debt. You can look to DSOs for experience in the "real" world. Get your reps in as they say. 1-2 years. BUT. I would not recommend a young dentist continue with the DSO as a career direction. A DSO is a dead end situation. DEAD. No real upside. Associateship leading to partner/owner would be my choice. I understand though. DSOs are proliferating.

Older dentists. That would be myself. 61 years old. The DSO has been perfect for my needs. No management stress to deal with. No staff issues to deal with. Clock in - clock out. Get paid a daily with bonuses. More than enough money. Can adjust my schedule based on my needs. I never come home thinking about work. NEVER.
DSOs are perfect for the older dentists in the back nine of their career. I enjoy what I do and will work as long as I decide.

I've only worked for a single DSO, so my opinions are based on that ongoing experience. Can't opine on the different DSOs although my over all take is that these DSOs are not good for dentistry.

If you are a specialist, DSOs will treat you better than a GP. As a GP, we are basically replaceable grunts. The higher ups do not expect you to stay on board and are not willing to invest in you.

From my observations, the only benefit for working at DSOs as a GP is if you work at a denture mill, you will get good with making dentures profitable. For the most part, you will get taken advantage of by the higher ups/bosses. They don't have the incentives to mentor you and have you move on. It is not their license on the line when they don't order what you need, not repair needed equipment, and over schedule you.

There may be some Unicorn private practices that mentor & invest in you hoping you can stay and build your career with them.

The odds are, you aren't going to be happy with DSO. Most of my friends who went to DSO are not happy.

I work in a DSO. Great clinic with great staff, management, and environment. Most other clinics in this same DSO are not good. I would not have come here if I hadn't visited and toured beforehand. It was just different from the other dso clinics. I absolutely love it and consider myself lucky.

I do have to deal with the senior management occasionally, maybe once a month, but even then, it's not about me. It's usually about what new materials, stuff, clinic improvements, etc that we talk about. Perhaps they don't care as much because I produce a lot. Who knows.

I have a friend who’s pretty happy as an associate at a DSO. Apparently the owner dentist is a great mentor and super supportive. I know others who have worked as associates in private practice with crappy owners and hated it. A lot is going to come down to the level of the individual office. Long story short, do your homework!

Mind sharing how much you much you are being paid there per year? Starting salary, 2-3 years out, maximum income of an associate without owning, etc.

I posted in the other thread with Pablo but I produce about 100k a month and I take about 33-35k a month.
