Just wanted to know what are the best grad schools for a MA in psych. Something more research oriented. GPA is around a 3.6 and it would be great if the schools were on the east coast.

thanks

you might want to look at a similar thread I found http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=454469

but I am applying to MA programs as well, and I have heard real good things about New School, and they seem to be heavy on the research aspect of psych, Teachers College, Columbia University has an applied clinical psych MA track which is a 1 year program (Fall, Spring & Summer if im correct) so you may want to look into that as well, also BU has a good program... hope that helps and if u stumble on some info let me know cuz Im applying like you!

I've heard very good things about the Wake Forest research MA/MS, so maybe it is worth checking out. I should give them a call, as much as I pimp their program, I should be able to get some $ from it! Heck, I'd settle for an adjunct position. 😉

I've heard positive things about Villanova (from a poster on this board and from others). I visited it myself, and thought it was great for the research-inclined. You also have the potential of being funded, which is rare in MA or MS programs (I think Wake Forest is funded, too).

Warning about New School (and NYU, if you haven't already checked that out, too): $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!! NYU doesn't even offer financial aid. So, if that's a concern ...

Thanks...

I have another quick question... is there a combine MA/PhD program... or would I have to get a Masters before going to get a PhD... I'm looking for more research oriented programs...

Thanks again and good luck to everyone who's applying...

P.S. This isn't my profile... I'm too lazy to create my own so I am using a friend's...

You mean at Villanova? There's no PhD program. That helps explain why there's funding available for the MS program.

New School has a PhD, but it's a separate application, I think. People who get into the MA program aren't automatically admitted into the PhD program, and I think they are advised at the end of the MA whether or not they should even apply to the PhD. There's some more info on the New School floating around SDN; I'd just do a search.

Check out the Insider's Guide for PhD programs. That will tell you the % of admitted students who have Master's degrees.

A lot of PhD programs confer a Master's at the two-year mark, after completion of a thesis. But I wouldn't necessarily call them "combined" programs, since the MA isn't terminal. In fact, I'm not sure what the point is, unless it's just a formality in exchange for having you write a thesis.

Thanks...
