Best method to deal with convoluted verbal passages

So I noticed that I have the hardest time with passages that point out an assertion and then theres a lot of twists and turns with several quotes from different people who support it and others who dont. Theres a lot of details flying around and on top of all that, the passage has the audacity to ask me what the author's tone is.

Anyone know a good way to deal with convoluted passages? Passages that have questions that trick you with one single word
