Thanks for all the info so far on this board. I have solidified my want to go to a warm place for my medicine residency.

I haven't made sure that I don't want to do a residency yet, so I would like to keep that into consideration.

Can anyone give me some pros/cons on the programs on this list? The best on this list as far as location? As far as fellowship opportunities?

Here are some places I have either toured, have friends at, or would like to investigate: USF (Tampa), U of Arizona (Tucson), Banner Health, etc.

I am trying to find location, location, location...warm weather, beach would be awesome! some greenery would be awesome...but the last two requirements aren't too big of a deal.

I have a 226 step 1. starting third year in a few months and obviously it will depend on my third year recommendations, etc.

Disclaimer: This is coming from a very biased person based in CA.

I've lived in multiple places across the country and would place CA as home to some of the best, happiest places to live (as a resident, that is. The state as a whole is undergoing budget crises/economic woes comparable to Michigan's).

In SF (and other coastal bay area cities), you have proximity to beaches, mountains, wine tasting, blue skies ~ 300 days of the year, weather that is neither too hot or too cold (well, depending on your definition of cold: if < 50 is cold, then SF may not be the place for you). You can walk and take buses everywhere, and it's extremely diverse and open-minded. In LA (and other coastal S cal cities), you have possibly the best weather in the US with even more days of blue skies and proximity to the beach. You can't walk and take buses everywhere.

Of your N cal programs, Cal Pacific, UCSF, Kaiser SF are in great locations. Santa Clara Valley is a Stanford-associated county hospital near San Jose; cheaper to live here but more suburbia than city. Stanford is about ~ 30-1 hr away from SF, depending on traffic. It's also near a huge IKEA.

Another location I can speak to is Texas. Dallas is a fairly nice city - pretty wealthy and well-kept, and there is plenty of stuff to do - great shopping, restaurants, nightlife. Traffic is bad but definitely better than SoCal. Houston is similar but very very big, much more humid and the traffic sucks. The cost of living is beautifully cheap compared to living in CA, and if you wanted to settle down and buy a house this is the place to do it. The weather is very very hot and sometimes humid in the summer, and gets pretty cold in the winter (i.e. 1-2 snowfalls, ice, etc. but no more than 1-2 episodes/winter). The nearest beach is Galveston (few hours' drive) and there aren't any mountains that I know of...UTSW is a great program with great fellowship placement.

That's all I got time for now...

wow! thanks to the above poster! that helps quite a bit!
more from you when you have time would be great!

anyone else have any input?

Baylor-Dallas seemed like a pretty cushy/easy residency program with happy residents when I visited there several years ago. If you want fellowship, you'll probably have better luck inside Texas than elsewhere, though. That's probably true of a lot of the community hospitals.

thanks for the recommendation on UNM Internal med

anyone else know of any strong programs on the list that an "average joe" from a midwest school would be competitive for..?

also, i know geography should not be taken lightly when competition for residency positions are considered..
what are the most sought after geographical locations? cities and cities with warm weather?

Most sought after
Boston
San Francisco
Chicago
New York
then probably LA?

i also have a buddy who wants to apply to the same schools due to location and weather. he is looking into texas quite a bit...

however, his step 1 score is only a 196. Is this going to hold him back from getting into the University programs in general? He did not honor his internal medicine rotation, but got a special commendation or something along those lines.
Is he going to have a tough time matching into a decent program? Baylor? I know UTSW and UCSF are going to be a bit of a stretch.

Thanks again

North Carolina is great. At UNC, Duke or Wake you're 3 hours from mountains, 2 from beach, warm weather 3 seasons (and mild 40 degree-ish winters), and the programs are top notch. Tons of greenery, very high standard of living and a reasonable cost of living.
