Hey there,

I am just about done with my dentistry in India and wondering what approach to take to work in the united states. I have a few options but need guidance on what option to go for.

1. Obviously, the best way is to crack the NBDE, do the residency in a Uni. and work. But, this is quite complicated, time consuming and costly. I have heard that if you get selected in a Uni for residency, you get an allowance from the Uni. Is this true and if it is how much? The other question is how much does it cost to do the residency itself?

2. I was thinking. Can I work as a dental hygienist there? I will have to clear the dental hygiene exams there, but i guess that will be easier.
Ofcourse, it will be difficult to obtain a work visa for a dental hygienist. so, how abt this?

-I gain admission in to some diploma related to dental
-I'm prepared for clearing exams to practice as a dental hygienist and do so as soon as possible after landing in america.
-I complete my diploma and work part time as a dental hygienist
-After end of diploma, i convert my student visa in to a work visa.
-I can always study and crack the NBDE at a later stage..

Is my plan feasible????

As far as I know, you have to do a dental hygiene course in most states even to practice as a hygienist.the course is for about 2yrs.only on completion of the course u can take the dental hygiene exam upon clearing which u caN practice as a hygienist.

But, I have heard that you can clear the NBDHE exams and practice as a dental hygienist. Can some one clear this up?

Only one thing is obvious. With all due respect, you hardly have a clue on the topic you're asking about 🙂.

Do some research of past threads in this forum. Also, Dr. Google can be a great resource 🙂. Your best bet for DH "option" is Florida: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/dentistry/dn_lic_req.html

hi oblivion

I too just finished my BDS from a Govt. college in India this October.

I was extensively looking at all the options abroad and feel US/ Canada would be better.

actually confused which country to concentrate on.

definitely need to get a DDS asap. I'm also interested in academics i.e teaching per se. So was thinking of writing GRE/Toefls and then applying to MPH or MS (oral biology, craniofacial biology etc.) and get into US/Canada and then prepare for boards sideways.

What are u planning to do?study for boards in India?
