I was wondering, since we have a alot of experienced practitioners, if they, and all others in the know, would be willing to list who the best physiatrists are in the various subspecialities of rehab. I think it would be cool for people like me (med students) to see who is the most accomplished and try to model ourselves and surpass those who are shaping one whole branch of medicine.

Just to clarify the last sentence, I mean no disrespect when I say "surpass" those physiatrists. I think a better choice of words would be who are the people that we can actually build off of their progress, since they are the best at what they do. Can anyone list, for my interests, those PM&R people who are acknowledged as great sports med guys?

just a med student but I'll help start your list...

Malanga & Nadler

Malanga and the dearly departed Scott Nadler are great leaders in PM&R sports medicine. Other great PM&R sports med guys/gals are Jay Smith (Mayo), Brian Davis (UC Davis), Michael Andary (Michigan State), Brian Krabak (previously Hopkins and now at UW Seattle), Heidi Prather (Wash U in St. Louis), Anne Zeni Hoch (Wisconsin, female sports med), Robert Gotlin (Beth Israel NYC), Gerard Varlotta (NYC, affiliated with NYU), Larry Chou (Havertown, PA, previously w/ UPenn) and Stuart Willick (Univ of Utah). Those are the names that I have come up with who are highly respected in PM&R when it comes to Sports Medicine.

Very soon, rehab_sports_dr will be the next leader in our field when it comes to Sports Medicine. Hopefully, we can create more sports med fellowships in PM&R that can now be ACGME accredited.

I'm biased but have to add Joel Press et al. at SSRC (paul lento, Chris Plastaras, Josh Rittenberg). In women's MSK care - Colleen Fitzgerald. - many of the above teaching at the AAPM&R annual assemblies.

Also Geraci from Buffalo and Stan Herring and our new journal's editor-in-chief Stu Weinstein

Another biased comment but if talking sports medicine particularly running medicine then Robert Wilder at UVA has to be mentioned.

we are very focused on a very very small area in physiatry aren't we? btw Mike Andary is well-known for electromygraphy, not sports medicine.

I can agree that we're talking about a very small portion of physiatry. Any other branches of physiatry that one or multiple physicians stand out in their respective field?

I've had the privelege of working with Michael Weinik at Temple. He did non-operative spine care for both the Eagles and Flyers for many years. He and Larry Chou often refer complicated patients to each other.

This is obviously a long list, and I agree with everyone listed above.

At RIC, certainly Joel Press, Paul Lento, Joe Ihm, Chris Plastaras, and Josh Rittenberg all stand out

I didn't see if anyone mentioned Venu Akuthota and his partners at Colorado

Jay Smith's partners at Mayo, Ed Lakowski and Karen Newcomer, deserve mention

Greg Mulford in NJ, who is affiliated with Kessler, is excellent

William Micheo, the chair at Puerto Rico, is outstanding, as is his partner Luis Baerga

There are more that can be named, and I agree that everyone listed above deserved to be mentioned

Excuse my ignorance on this, but from one of the posts mentioning running medicine, what are the various breakdowns of "sports medicine" for someone to pursue? And who, from those mentiioned already or otherwise, do people say "If you train under this person, you're golden" (or something to that effect🙂

Joel Press, Paul Lento, Joe Ihm, Chris Plastaras, Josh Rittenberg, Colleen Fitzgerald, Larry Chou, Michel Geraci, Stuart Willick, Heidi Prather, Venu Akuthota, axm397, rehab_sports_dr - why don't we just get it overwith already, and just say anyone who was ever affiliated, in any manner, with RIC 😛

Good call.
I emailed Dr. Weinik recently to invite him to speak at one of our future Pre-SOMA meetings at Temple U, and I'm looking forward to making it happen.
