I would like to try and work as a Pharmacy Technician.
I am overwhelmed as to the possibilities.
Walgreens, Target, KMart, CVS, Publix and then the Hospitals.
For some of you with experience...
Where is the best place, and who is looking into getting some Financial Aid for Pharmacy School from them?
Thank you 😕

They're all good choices. A lot depends on the pharmacist you work for. I currently work at CVS, and a big reason I love working there is because the pharmacist is a great teacher and enthusiastic about my pursuit of becoming a pharmacist. It really makes a HUGE difference. I know you can't pick who you work for, but before you commit to a store get a vibe for your RPh. I am also interested in learning about retail store financial aid.

i personally enjoy working for an independent pharmacy

megrxgirl, can you tell us why? I'm just gathering info as I apply for pharm tech jobs... 😀

I 😍 Target.

But your RPh makes a huge difference. I just happen to adore the two I work with. 😎

I recommend hospital pharmacy because you can learn a lot of "clinical" pharmacy that will be really useful to you in pharmacy school. Although I haven't done strictly retail, I still feel that hospital would be the way to go if you wanted to learn on a broader stage.

I have worked at Walgreens, an HMO (Scott and White Pharmacy), and in an independant. In my opinion, I have learned the most while working at Walgreens. To me Walgreens is one of the busiest pharmacies almost everywhere you go, so there is a chance to learn a lot. You are responsible for doing EVERYTHING - (processing, filling, ordering, called doctors, insurance, etc) which I thought was hard at the time, but now that I'm in pharmacy school, I apprecite all that. I'm sure you will get more clinical experience in a hospital, I havent worked there before, but if this is your first time, I think Walgreens is a good start.

If you are wanting to get a "head start" on pharmacy school I would recommend hospital pharmacy. Not only can you do unit dose dispensing (essentially what retail is) but you can do IV admixture, Chemotherapy, and a whole host of other things that you would otherwise be learning for the first time in pharmacy school. One thing that is great about hospital pharmacy is that it is not necessarily as fast paced as retail and as a result it allows for many opportunities for you to learn about how the medications you are dispensing work to treat the disease. I would look into it if you are planning on going to pharmacy school. That's my 2 cents! Best of luck!

I am a Publix advocate. As everyone has said though, it depends on your pharmacists. I've worked with several and I've only had one that I didn't really like a lot!
If you are looking for your first tech job you might have a better shot at retail. In my city/region, there are virtually no hospital positions unless you are certified.
But hospital experience would be great if you got so lucky! 😉

I probably opened my mouth when I should not have. I have never worked in a chain pharmacy or in a hospital pharmacy so what do I know. But I enjoy working at an independent b.c I have a close relationship with my boss and I am under the impression that he takes better care of us than a chain pharmacy would, but this may not be the case. My next goal is to become certified and to work in a hospital pharmacy, after 3 years in a retail pharmacy I am ready to experience a different pharmacy setting.

How did you find the pharm tech jobs? Call the pharmacy manager? any web sites?

Thank you so much y'all. This is a ton of awesome advice.
I am hoping to hear from the hospital, but the resident I sent an email to is taking forever.
I dont want to jump the gun an try another place until I hear from her.
I'll give her another week.

Thanks again 😍 !!!!

I think a compounding pharmacy would be interesting to work at. I worked at a retail pharmacy over the summer though. I think I might work there over Christmas vacation too.
