Hi everyone 🙂

I'm an aspiring PT student looking into schools for the upcoming application cycle with the goal to attend next year, which I can hardly believe! I'm so excited to join this career field, but I have a question here that I was hoping someone could help me with.

My dream is to one day own and run a PT clinic of my own, and as I'm looking into PT programs, I was wondering if anyone had any input about which schools might best prepare me to do that in the future? I don't plan on starting one right out of school of course, but maybe 5-10 years after graduation it's something I really want to try. Are there any schools out there that go the extra mile as far as providing the practical or business know-how of how to successfully start a clinic? Because I would definitely want to check those out.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!!

Nope. Business aspect of PT is not a part of DPT program. We had 1 class about administration.

I think it is becoming more common for schools to have a course where there is a project of designing a practice (or some sort of other programming). That might be a bonus, but I have a feeling the actuality of opening/running a clinic is quite different, so I wouldn't count on any offering of a DPT program giving you that big of a leg up. Look into the Private Practice section of the APTA, probably lots of good info in there. People seem to figure it out, and especially if you aren't looking to do this right out of school, I wouldn't stress about it.

I believe there are some programs that allow you to become double major(MBA/DPT). Those are the ones that focuse on business side of things along with the major. I know a pharmacy double major program that does exactly this. You can also learn a lot from the streets. There are many things they don’t teach at MBA programs. Most of PTs are usually very helpful when it comes to business. Competition is not as tight as other markets out there, so they welcome newcomers. I’m only sharing my humble opinion, since I have a few years of marketing/communication background. This is what I have observed so far, please let me know if you find out more on this topic.
Cheers and good luck
