Anybody have recommendations on the best reference texts to have with me when I start as an attending? I'm thinking I'll get Uptodate on my iPad, but was wondering if there is any kind of reference that will help me double check myself and make sure I'm not failing to consider certain diagnoses etc?

I'm not a hospitalist but when I moonlighted as one (while a fellow), I used Pocket Medicine every day. Particularly for the situation you suggest...make sure I'm not missing a possible diagnosis. Otherwise I'd go with UTD and call it good.

Agree with gutonc...though utd is usually available on the hospital computers and through remote access so don't necessarily need to buy it

Agreed, I think with pocket medicine and uptodate, you should be ready to tackle anything!

UCSF has a hospitalist handbook which you can download on your smart phone which is similar to pocket medicine which I've looked through and found pretty decent

Uptodate - Read summary and recommendations. If the answer is not there, consult.
