Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew the best schools for African Americans. I'm thinking about applying to Howard, NYU, Columbia, USC, and Temple. Does anyone know how race relations really are at these schools (not Howard of course)?

Thanks!

well, if you make race relations a big deal, then they will become a big deal. why this fixation? if you wanna know whether or not you'd feel isolated or out of place, then check out the racial/ethnic profile of the school's 2004 class. they provide this info in their website. schools which have a relatively small percentage of black students are obviously not gonna be your first choice. simple as that!!!....also, consider the location of the school. for instance, you'd probably be happier at temple, penn or umd than you'd be at buffalo or stony brook, or any school in boston.

Howard and Meharry are considered black schools. Your chances of being accepted any place else are just as good as the rest of us.

From talking to minority dentists on my own, I have been told that Maryland and Michigan are both "minority friendly" schools. In my opinion, it is important to consider this as a factor when choosing a school because you will likely be one of few African American students in your dental school class if you choose to go to any school other than Howard or Meharry, but you definitely don't want to go to a school that is not supportive or a friendly atmosphere to these students.

Whatever you do, make sure that when you apply you make contacts with the minority students at the schools that you visit so that you can gain honest feedback about their experiences at the schools. Dental school has enough stresses already and you definitely don't want to be in an uncomfortable environment (meaning non-minority friendly). However, just because a school doesn't have very many African American students doesn't mean it's not a friendly atmosphere, but in a few cases may be an indicator.

I think the term that is being searched for on SDN to describe Howard and Meharry is "Historically Black College's and Universities" these schools are majority AA so race relation would not be an issue here.

Outside of that the following schools are pretty good:

Michigan (which graduates the most AA dentists outside of Meharry and Howard)

University of North Carolina

University of Maryland

Also if you interview at the school ask the AA students how active the SNDA chapter is.

You should get the "official guide to dental schools" and "Opportunities for Minority Students in United States Dental Schools 2003-2005" they give detailed breakdowns of each schools admissions numbers including AA admitted, retained, graduating etc.

PM me if you have any other questions.
