A US medical school would be your best bet. It is easier to match into these specialties with a MD from a US school. Internal medicine is taught everywhere, so a DO school is also a possibility for IM, even a Caribbean school is OK for medicine.

What schools are best for learning the following programs and getting residencies into said programs?

1. Neurology
2. Nephrology
3. Internal Medicine
4. Cardiology

Also, I am interested in surgery (I would say very interested, but seeing as how I've never been awake during a surgical procedure, I really don't know how much I'd like it). Which schools are best for general surgery and surgery in the four listed categories?

As the others alluded to, any US medical school will put you into a position to do any of those fields. Don't pick a med school based on some perceived notion that they "put" graduates into certain fields.

However, you should know that the four listed categories are NOT surgical. Nephro and cards are fellowships after an internal medicine residency. Neurology is its own residency (and is non-operative).

Not completely true. One could do a surgery residency in addition to neuro and be a neurosurgeon, and a surgery residency, followed by cardio to be a cardiac surgeon. I don't believe IM has a surgery option, but could be wrong. The only neph surg option I can think of is a transplant surgeon.

I was specifically referring to the fields he listed. "Neurology" does not equal neurosurgery, and "cardiology" does not equal CT surgery. I am aware that you can operate on the brain and the heart - but the fields he listed are distinct fields with their own non-surgical residencies/fellowships.

Shiftingmirage - I'm not sure if you were serious or not, but cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery separate subspecialties of surgery. They do not do residencies in cardiology or neurology.

OP- right now, like most premed students you have broad interests. The specialties you mention are all very common and you will get exposure at any medical school.

It doesn't matter where you go. Neurology is not a competitive field and the competitiveness of internal medicine varies by program but it is the field with the most residency spots so as long as you get good clinical grades and good board scores you'll get a spot at a well-regarded program, regardless of where you went to medical school. Nephrology and Cardiology are fellowships that you do after residency and it only matters where you did residency and how well you did there; fellowship programs don't care where you went to med school.

As mentioned, surgery is entirely different and neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery are surgical specialties. The list of "the best" surgery programs varies a lot by candidate because of the continued existence of very malignant surgery programs that have an excellent reputation but are horrible places to spend 5-10 years of your life in training.

Nephrology and Cardiology are medical subspecialties. They require internal medicine residency.

For the other specialties (Neurology and Internal Medicine) you probably want to check the US News and World Report rankings.
