2nd year is better for sure. If you don't like 2nd year better than first year, then you shouldn't be here. And if you haven't found something that's even remotely interesting to you by the end of it, then you shouldn't be here.
That being said, I sucked during 1st year. I hated it, and my grades slouched (bottom of Q3). I liked 2nd year better and did the mean or above on just about every single test. So if you hate first year because you suck at it, it'll be ok. I also thought I was working hard last year. Not so much. 2nd year is a ton more work, I mean hell, our last 2 weeks of class we had a block exam in path, phys diagnosis exam, and a path and pharm cumulative final. The path and pharm stuff was well over 1000 pages each with regards to the handouts. But I had a feeling by the end that I'd be able to handle it. We were having an exam a week all spring in various classes, and it was about 200 pgs/wk with regards to memorization of material. Then pump and dump, rinse and repeat. You'll amaze yourself with what you can handle.
Also, vote me in the 'Robbins believers' camp. It was not mandatory and our path course director uses test questions straight from the handouts, so reading it wasn't necessary, but I really liked it. Didn't use RR much for primary study. I like pictures and sentences explaining stuff and if I could see a slide of the disease, I had an easier time filling in the framework, especially when it came to test taking. Visual learner.
