Hello all,

I'm new to the smartphone world. Would like to purchase a smartphone in the next month or two (my plan is up). Any recommendations on which one to get? Looking at switching to Verizon (my current carrier is awful). Any phones that are better for medical school, in particular?
Note: I'm thinking of getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (tablet), so I would rather not purchase the Samsung Galaxy Note II (phone)-- especially because of the price tag.

Thanks for the feedback! 😍

There is a new maple syrup phone coming out in march...might be able to kill two birds with one stone...

The galaxy S IV is supposed to be coming out in the next few months. It is supposed to be amazing.

I have the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD and absolutely love it. Absolutely no problems so far and my battery lasts two days. Plus it feels like it's built well, unlike all the Galaxy phones I've picked up.

It does cost some $$$ though. They have a version that's the same just doesn't have the great battery for cheaper.

I was a droid lover for a while, but couldn't get over the unreliability of the phones. I will never purchase anything motorola again.

I've never owned, but I think the samsung line is awesome. I've had my iphone for 2 years and haven't had so much of a hiccup in terms of reliability. I'll be sticking with the iphone, but I think samsungs are worth a look, too. They're just too large for me.

Galaxy S3. Iphone 5 feels like a piece of crap it weighs so little.

If you're a girl, you might want to look into the Galaxy Note phone. If you're a guy, it will be a pain to carry it around because it doesn't fit in pockets.. Unless you're a guy that carries around a purse-like bag.

Touché, lol. Galaxy 3s or 4 would be good and would give you more chargers since they all use microUSB now. Plus, I think that tablet uses microUSB too.

Galaxy S3 or wait for the galaxy S4.

I actually have an upgrade available on my line, just holding out for the galaxy S4 and note 3 to come out and I'll get one of those.

iPhone, 4S or 5 (your choice)

As light as the 5 feels, it's actually very solidly built, I prefer it greatly to the iPhone 4S body style now that I've had it for a while.

Despite all the cool features of some Android phones, you can't beat the iPhone for app selection. Especially app selection that's actually worth your time. If you want the best in medical applications, and best in reliability; there's really no other choice.

But I suspect this will be countered by most Android fans. It's a lot like MD vs. DO, huge fanboy's on either side for sure!

iPhone 5 is awesome. Deal with it.

iPhones for me have been great, no issues in many years of using them(3GS/4).

🙄 Seems ironic?

Either iPhone 5 or Galaxy SIII. Both are great phones. It comes down to do you like iOS or Android better.

I agree 100% with this statement. Can't go wrong with either. I prefer the android myself.

It's unfortunate he likes the Wild though. 1 for 2 isn't bad for a random internet person though. 😉

Any thoughts on the Nexus 4? Pros and cons? I'm looking into it right now.

Good luck finding one. Sold out and major supply issues. Also lack of 4g is a deal breaker for me. But nexus is the best when it comes to getting software updates to the newest versions of android.

The Wild AND the Gophers 🙂

I know you're an apple fanboy, but it's ok you're still cool I guess.

Haha I'm glad you think so. I still loved my Android phone, don't get me wrong. I'm just more of a fan for the medical apps on the iPhone. I think the SDN app is better on the Android. I can't figure out how to multiquote on the iPhone version. :boom:

I should have mentioned this earlier, but once you choose between Apple or Google, it is pretty easy to get locked into the "ecosystem." Especially if you start buying multiple devices and large amounts of apps.

So you do need to think a little more beyond just which phone you currently think is better. In general, you are going to have many more hardware (and $$$) options with Android, but may sacrifice some apps and stability (which is constantly improving). With iOS, you will be paying $$$ for a greater app list, better stability, and much more limited hardware choices.

Sent from my Droid RAZR MAXX HD. Typos may be present. I hope there are some hilarious ones.

All of your posts I have seen sound so much like me that I was beginning to wonder if you were some sort of an alternate personality of mine. Glad this thread finally showed me that you are, in fact, not me. 😎

I spent a long time comparing the S3 against the iPhone 5. The S3 is just better on all points, which is why I ended up getting it.

Both are great feats of technology, you'll be happy with either. If you want the most out of your smartphone, go with an S3 (or wait for an S4). If you want to be trendy and have "ease of use" go with the iPhone.

Do NOT go with a Motorola. They put out a new phone every 2-3 months, and stop supporting their previous models. Samsung only puts out 1 or 2 phones / year (like Apple), so you have better, longer lasting support.

Another big factor in deciding to go with the S3 is that I have an iPad too, so I wanted to diversify a bit.

Looks nice. I'm just disappointed with Sony and their huge delays in getting software updates.

I've been more of a Samsung fan over the years compared to Sony. Samsung's quality justifies the price for me, whereas Sony is also expensive but leaves much to be desired.

Oh. Apps are for noobs. I'm going all natural (no apps)!

I don't use most of the apps I have downloaded. I'm hoping there may come a time when they prove useful. They're good so long as you don't download apps for things you should instinctively know, like CPR. That's just sad if you need an app for that.

Galaxy S3.

Traded in my iPhone for it and there's no looking back. Gotta love the big screen to read all the SDN mobile DO vs MD threads on.

Lumia 920.

Pff, Apple fan boys.

Any thoughts on the Nexus 4? Pros and cons? I'm looking into it right now.

I have one. It's amazing in every way. Lack of 4g lack of 4shmee. Quite frankly, 4g consumes too much battery in a world where wifi is everywhere and HSPA+ is fast enough. Fast enough for what? Everything except stream 1080p Netflix to a Miracast enabled TV when your wifi goes down. Any time I have had a speed problem it has been in an area where my connection is poor, which is carrier based and probably is going to affect the 4g anyway. A real con? It's a gorgeous phone that 100% needs a case. Feels like holding grandma's crystalware. Ask me a specific question if you like.

Not sure how much you use yours, but about how much battery do you get out of it? With normal use I usually will get 10-12 hours out of a battery. I have been to many phone stores and have messed around with many phones and I really liked the Nexus 4 the most so far. I plan to buy the 16gig online when more become available but I am just wondering if you DO have any complaints, what are they? How are the cameras and picture quality?

Battery is OK. Just OK. I played di.fm and pandora all day at the library (six hours or so), did a bunch of facebook during class (lol) and have about an hour and a half of screen time on auto brightness. Took it off the charger at 9am and it is 745 now. I have 38% battery left. The battery is the only thing I wish was better and word is there are some issues with 4.2 that are causing some things like the OS to drain pretty bad (it's my biggest consumer right now at 20%, screen is #2 at 14%). I usally get about 5 minutes per percent battery screen time but that doesn't include things like mediaserver and the OS. So that's alright, but hopefully 4.3 fixes it. Also, if you like to root there are some roms that seem to make it better. I am stock unrooted.

You know why there aren't any cute nicknames for Windows fans? Because there aren't any windows fans

I'd be bitter too if I was receiving the same phone every time a "new" one came out.

🙂
