Hey guys,

I have already shadowed a general dentist and i loved it. I wanted to shadow some specialities for the summer... Any recommendations???

Everyone has their own preferences so I would suggest trying to shadow a little bit of everything. Personally I enjoyed shadowing an oral surgeon and I worked at a pedo office.

+1 for oral surgery! Unless you get light headed easily which could make for a long day😀

I shadowed an orthadontist for a little while. I was never really was interested in this specialty and remain the same after shadowing. However, I enjoyed shadowing and learning a little bit about that aspect of dentistry. Definitely not a waist of my time. This is something you won't see in a general practice (for the most part)... So it can be interesting.

I would shadow all the specialties for a few reasons but for one in specific. You won't know who will be interviewing you at a school you have been invited to interview at and what speciality he/she practices.

At a lot schools you will get one faculty and one student or at least one faculty interview. At one interview I had a faculty who was a Periodontist. This was the only speciality that I had not shadowed :smack:. So right from the get go he had a preconceived notion that I didn't have interest in his profession. It made for an interesting interview explaining why I hadn't shadowed one.

However, the interview went great, but I have a feeling it would have gone much better if I had shadowed his specific speciality. Just learn from my mistake I didn't think would be an issue and shadow every one.

-General
-Oral Surgery
-Ortho
-Endo
-Perio
-Pediatric
-Pros (not as common, but you never know)

Most interesting would definitely go to OS. I mean, some of the things I saw left my face like this 😱

Perio's gum graft and implants are also interesting.

+1

I do have to say that I'm quite partial to endo and I highly recommend going to shadow at least one. I think oral surgery would be really cool to see too. It's next on my "to-shadow" list.

If you decide to shadow in perio or OMFS, don't pass out your first day lol.

Shadow the specialty that you did not witness with your gp.

Get enough exposure to simple stuff that you know what you're talking about at the interview. When I was at Temple, Brian asked everyone what their favorite "toy" in the dental office was. The girl next to me said "the vacuum straw".

perio!!! implants, gum surgery, bone grafts... fun stuff😀
