I was wondering which schools are best if you want to specialize after dental school. Specifically, which is better if you want to specialize - SIU, UofM, Indiana, Iowa, or UIC?

The best postdoc programs to specialize are those with the largest specialty programs of particular interest. Bigger means better due to increased funding through research, and a larger pool of specialists to learn from in your particular area.

However, don't jump on the specialization wagon yet, you need to be in the top of your class to have a chance. If you think you will not be burned out by taking excessive class loads and not having any summers off, then go ahead and look into it.

I would suggest Iowa and then UIC as good prep work. Iowa has a really tough program, not to say nowhere else doesn't, but they also have excellent research opportunities and facilities. Research in your field of interest is very important on an application, but even more important of the people recommending you are well known.

Good luck to wherever you go.

I agree with paulallen. That's a pretty similar list to schools that I'm considering, and I'll assume you're an Illinois resident. Out of the Illinois (SIU/UIC) schools, I think UIC would be the better of the two if you wanted to specialize -- I can't pass up the in-state tuition, so it?s my first choice. Go to SIU if you want to be a general dentist, that is what they pride themselves on producing. UIC offers a much better opportunity to participate in research, if that is your thing. (Research bores the hell out of me). UIC is getting a dent-sim lab as well, and just remodeled the 2nd year labs?

Paulallen: do you go to UIC?

Hello Zurich5,

No, I will be attending University of Iowa in the Fall. However, I have/had been working with several specialists (grads from UIC and Iowa) and basically received the down low. Their advice was to do research, do well throughout all four, and kill the boards. I have some friends in dental school now (one reason I found out about the career potential of going into dentistry) and they said the same thing. My only concern is looking into specializing before I have even taken a class. Dental school will be harder than the actual process of applying and getting in. This is just the beginning...

The other major issue : Where to go?
Everyone I have talked to, that generally knows what they're talking about, encourages going to a state school b/c in the end, it doesn't matter where you go (the student decides if they want to be a good dentist, Harvard doesn't), but it does matter how much you have to pay back (I did get accepted to 2 private schools and would have chosen that route if needed).

Good luck to all,

I'll do research if I have to, but I'm pretty sure it would have to be 5 hours or so a week for the first two years. Sounds like you have a good plan, best of luck at iowa.

I prefer:
"An MD may have a higher gpa, but a DDS got laid a lot more in college."

I'll second that!

I enjoy well round people who are not social misfits. If you attend UIC check out the bar scene, expensive, but you're paying in-state tuition, so who cares.
