I am moving soon and part of my decision involves where residency is most helpful (i.e. not California). Right now both Illinois and Florida are strong possibilities and I was wondering if either might be a better choice.

Looks like I used a shotgun when you wanted a more precise instrument... I'll try to get something for you.

Anecdotally between these two I would say Florida (though you will need to research the residency rules). 3 State Schools and 1 Private School with a strong preference for state residents. UF and Miami have good names. I've heard good things about USF and FSU appears to be a fairly easy school to get into. I enjoyed living in Florida when I was in the Navy. Plus you can still apply to all the private schools in Illinois.

On the flip side in Chicago you'd be really close to a few great schools. Money-wise, you'll probably spend more on med school there. If you are looking for a better shot at getting into a state school I'd take Florida. If you want the absolute best states for in-state admissions then check out Mississippi, Alabama, & South Carolina.

What areas do you need help with in your app. or is it just getting away from the competitive CA market?

I need to improve my UG GPA a fair amount.

In that case you'll want to consider the schools in the area you choose to relocate. Check out the Post-Baccalaureate Programs... There are a few in Illinois (Loyola, Sothern Illinois, etc.) & Florida (USF, Miami, Barry, North Florida in Jacksonville)
