A MSAR from one year or another isn't going to matter. The data doesn't change that much. It only matters if you care about having the most recent edition of everything.

For what it's worth, I used a MSAR that was two years old when I was picking out schools. IMO, the MSAR should ONLY be used for picking out schools to apply to. I definitely wouldn't rely on it for any other information (e.g., secondary prices, required/recommended courses, etc.) simply because that stuff can change on a dime. If you absolutely need that kind of info, get in touch with the particular schools you're curious about.

Any time before you apply, obviously.

I want to apply this June and want to come up with a list of schools to apply to as soon as I can and understand that the MSAR is a great resource for doing this. However, I know that it is updated every year. So when would be the best time for me to purchase it?

I found one for free at the college library near my house. They had editions that went back for several years. I spend an hour or so with it before class one day. I just made photocopies of the schools I was most interested in then took them home.

Also the DO version of it is available as a PDF for free. I picked up a paper version at a DO informational meeting I attended for a pre-med club.

Ok cool, thanks for the responses. So there wouldn't be too much of a benefit in buying the latest version right? So I could just buy it now?

Buy it whenever you're ready to start making your school list. I bought mine in April or May and applied in June.

Where can you find the DO version?

Google cib. It's not exactly the same.. And not really useful imo.

When you buy it you get a free online subscription for a year, which is nice. If you're applying this upcoming cycle, I'd buy it now.

wait, so when do they actually update it? anybody know?

+1 to this. When you buy it online, you get a one year subscription, so when they do update the info, you are privy to it.
