Hi guys, I'm a relatively new member here.

I'm wondering when the best time would be to take my DAT. I'm currently a sophomore with a 3.64 gpa and around a 3.75 science gpa. I was originally going to take the DAT at the end of this summer (I would have about 2 and 1/2 months to study) but many of my other friends have waited until the summer between their junior and senior year, take the DAT in early July, and then still applied right after. I'm looking to apply at the end of my junior year and enter straight into dental school.

The reason why I was apprehensive about taking my DAT this summer was because I havent taken physio or anatomy yet, and I looked at some of the practice tests and they seemed to have a good amount of those types of questions. For those of you who have been in a similar situation, is it better to learn the physio myself and study all summer and take the DAT at the end of this summer, or should i take summer school classes, take the spring quarter of my junior year very light (so I can study for my DAT), study for a month when school gets out (early June), and then take my DAT?

I have a decent science background, but I'm worried that 2.5 months isn't long enough. What do you guys recommend? I was also worried about the "second" plan (to take it next summer) because I'd be taking an easy spring quarter and that will probably come up at all of my interviews. Anyway, thanks in advance for any of your advice.

thats too long IMO. 8 weeks is more than enough. I think thats a great idea. Clearly you can handle uni level courses due to your high gpa. I say if you have the time, you should take it this summer. The only issue I can think of is that the DAT scores may last for 2-3 years ( depending on each school). So, if you take it now, get a descent score and decide not to take it again, but then get rejected, your scores Might expire. But i personally think your plan sounds good. ALSO, i took cell bio and the 2 intro bio's and got a 20 on the BIO section, you will be fine, dont worry too much about that, just prepare in an efficient matter and you will come out successful.

After my Junior year spring semester of undergrad, I took my DAT July 8th. I submitted my completed application June 20th and it was still in the first mailing which was June 26th or 27th. Needless to say, I got into my number 1 school Dec 1st, with interviews at many other schools. While it is always optimal to get everything done ASAP, it is not necessary.

2.5 mo is a very long time to study. I would suggest a month of pure estiadiamos-ing. During my spring semester I went through everything once very very very superficial so I would know what the material was I needed to cover and what i needed to know. Then from May to June I studied my bum off and did fairly well. by the end of 2.5 mo you will have forgotten what you studied the first day.

You see the advantage of a high GPA (like urs) is that you don't need to ace the DAT to stay competitive. Anything in the 19+ range and you'll have a good application.

2.5 months will do the trick if you buckle down and work. As matter of fact (I learned this the hard way), it is a disadvantage to push your studies past 8-10 weeks, because you start to forget material covered in the first month (so you have to go back and re-review).
