Best time to take Step 3?

I am currently applying for residency and I got interviews on January mainly. I wanted to know if there is really time to take/prepare for the Step 3 during the prelim year or is it better to do it before starting the prelim next July? I am interested in getting a good score in my step 3 for it will be important for future jobs/personnal satisfaction, so I really wanna give it all into it.

Good question. I want to know what people think also.

Don't want to jump in on your question, but I am also wondering when people are going to take step 2 CS. In my school it is not a requirement for graduation, but for majority of the programs I am applying to, you have to pass before starting the program. I don't know if this is in stone though, since this is the first year of Step 2 CS.
