I am having a devil of a time with a Trojan virus

A friend of mine recently wiped my computer clean and upgraded it from Windows XP
to Windows XP professional

He changed my virus protection to AVG

I have never had a problem with virus like I am now....I used Norton before....
Should I go back or has the nasty Trojan nested in my hard drive for good?

I go to the registry edit and routinely delete the infected pages but the Trojan just mutates into something else.

HELP!!!!! :scared:

Norton is awesome. It's worth the money.

This scares me!! What exactly do you mean by this? The registry should have a look-but-don't-touch policy, imho. Honestly, a good virus program will automatically clean/delete a virus so you won't even have to mess with the registry, which is pretty risky.

My friend walked me through with what I need to do there....plus I do have a little experience. I let the computer search for the "violated program" and then I delete it.

The problem with the virus...which I have nicknamed RNA.....is it replicates and then mutates.

I turn off the computer and there it is again...after my computer says it was clean from the last virus sweep, search and destroy mission. It is buried somewhere in the hard drive that my virus program can not get to......but I am still battling it. I am making headway though...it no longer takes over my homepage holding it hostage :meanie:

But if anyone has a better suggestion.....I am open!!

have you tried deleting the virus or running a virus scan from safe mode? Sometimes this helps get rid of those annoying viruses that keep coming back.

Also, try running these online virus-scanners...

Also, use Ad-Aware and Spybot to get rid of spyware, which may be helping the virus (esp. trojans) replicate.

I have ad-aware and I am running it quite often.....I have a pop up blocker from Netscape running.

It is a Trojan virus. At first it stole my home page and would not let me go anywhere but to the infected home page. I managed to stop that but it keeps popping back up if the computer goes into standby mode or I turn off the computer.

My virus software is AVG and I am wearing it out cleaning house so often. :scared:

Kaspersky is the best currently, beating norton/etc. They have a 30 day free trial as well, google for them..

Out of curiousity, do you know the name of the virus?

The software calls it a Trojan virus and I can't remember the other name to it...but I am sure it will pop up again and I will post it.

Off to google!!

I downloaded the Kaspersky trial Virus program and it seemed to do a better job at cleaning my files BUT I still have 4 infected files that the virus program can't touch......hmmmmmm, Don't know what to do about that one except go back to registry edit.

I am down to 4 nested viruses.....

I know at least one of them is a Trojan.dropper

I am too tired to fight the good fight anymore tonight....

Ad-Aware + McAfee = The best I have seen

I opened the computer with the safe mode and ran the Kaskersky anti virus software and had to physically go and delete some folders in the registry edit. But I did it....So far so good.

Thanks guys for the advice....You folks really helped me out of a bind...

Trojan free!!!!

I pm'd you with the gory details of my story and my Trojan vanquishment...

let me know if I can be of further help!!

I also had AVG and got a nasty trojan virus that it wouldn't get rid of. After struggling with it for a few weeks, I finally got rid of avg and got mcafee. It got rid of at the first scan I did and hasn't been back. Avg sucks.

Thanks for this info. 👍 It worked for me.

And thanks to DSM for starting this thread. Let's all remain trojan-free. Except in bed. :meanie:

Norton Antivirus 2005, just released last week.

It is definelty the best antivirus solution on the market at the moment. It incorporates a new "Worm Wall" that keeps worms out, as well as using heuristics to prevent as yet undetected worms from entering your system.

anyone tried Avast! 4 home edition http://www.avast.com- it's free 🙂 and I am scared of the reviews of Norton AV 2004/5 on amazon. 😱
Any comments?

Tri McAfee antivirus. You can find a retail version on eMule download network.

try bullguard - its awesome
