Best way to study math

Whats the best way to study for math? Is it best first to read through Kaplan math for example and understand the formulas, or go straight into math questions and keep practicing? How much time is good for preparation and studying do you feel is sufficient to score a good grade? Give or take learning the math formulas and putting them to work in the questions.
