I have asked in the past with little luck. I'd appreciate any feedback. I'm going to VCU SOD. My family lives in NY, NJ and MD. When I get out of school, I completely intend to practice in VA but I am close to my family and can't see myself ever heading further South than VA.

In 2005, VA started excepting the NERB so that people moving to DC wouldn't stay in MD exclusively (both are NERB regions). VCU only offers the SRTA exams though. Ultimately, I would only practice in a state that accepts the NERB now that VA was added to the list. It would be impractical for me to take the SRTA.

Does anyone know if it is possible to go to a school that only offers the SRTA and schedule to take the NERB elsewhere? Is it more difficult for the clinical part because you aren't used to the setup of whereever you are going to be taking the exam? or are you given standard material at each place?

I guess I'm not even sure if going to a school that offers the SRTA would prepare you as well for the NERB. Can anyone help with any of these q's?

Thanks.

Each school will most likely keep in mind the regional exam their own state requires during the four (or three) years of pre-doctoral dental education. With that said, I am certain you are able to take any and all regional exams you choose. You are in no way obligated to take one regional exam over another. Keep in mind though that you will be responsible for understanding the breadth and differences between the ones you want to take, and the one geared for by your school. I know a lot of schools have fourth year lectures/mocks on the regional board specific to the state, and therefore you would not have this preparation for another regional exam. In all, if you want to take another regional exam, you are more than able, but it will probably just require a little more self motivation, direction, and study. Every school will more or less prepare you for any and all regional boards. You will figure this and a lot more out over the next four years. Good luck.

It won't be a big deal to attend a SRTA school and take the NERB somewhere else. Many students attend SRTA or NERB schools and arrange to take the WREB. All that would be involved is signing up for the NERB, reading their manual to determine what kinds of patients and typodonts you need, and a lot of money to buy everything and transport your patients to the site where the exam is.
