Get help with your application
Use all the free resources available to you from SDN: articles, guides, expert advising, forums discussions, and school research.
Apply to all of them and rank them in order of how much you like the program. The "best program(s)" is totally subjective in emergency medicine (I know it's been said ad nauseum but it's true). In my humble opinion they are USC, UCLA/Harbor, Highland and UC Davis in no particular order... I'm sure that if anyone else posts on this thread he will add or subtract from that list because there is no "official" rank list.
Don't worry if you think you have a chance or not apply anyway...you might be pleasantly surprised when you discover you happen to be the flavor of the week. Maybe the person reviewing your file at your top choice and supposedly unobtainable program happens to be looking for a crew dude from UCLA because she just happened to be a coxwain in her undergrad days.

Tone is referring to who looks at your file - I don't know about USC or Davis, but the PD at UCLA-Olive View is a woman.
As has already been noted, you have nothing to lose by applying. Do keep in mind that those are very competitive, and that has its advantages. For instance, if you want to work at Cottage Home in Santa Barbara you really need to be a UCLA grad, preferably from Harbor. It's only hearsay, but from what I understand pretty much everybody at Cottage Home (which probably has insanely good reimbursement) is a UCLA grad.
