Hi,
I'm currently a freshmen at a CC and I was wondering if it would be better to take my prereqs at a UC or a CC? I heard that pharm schools prefer UCs better....is there really a difference? I would prefer to take it at CC though...

That's a good question. Pharmacy schools do prefer you take classes at a UC. However (a big however), if you take classes, especially GE, at both a JC and UC then it doesn't really matter as long as you do well in the classes you take at a UC.

Your science grades matter much more so make sure you do well in those classes.

At the end of the day you need good grades. If you can get a 3.8 at CC but a 3.1 at a UC you may very well want to take them at a CC.

However, it kind of depends on where you are applying. If you are applying to UCSD and UCSF you can bet that they will prefer you to come from a UC. However some private schools (especially schools far from california) might not care as much.

Its a tradeoff on gpa vs school recognition.

If you take it at a UC, make sure you take it at one of the top 5: (LA, Berkeley, SD, Irvine, Davis)...or better yet at just LA or Cal for the name recognition. Might as well milk it for what it is worth.

It's just you'll pay up the nose as a visiting student, which was approx. $203/quarter unit. That's about $812 per 4-unit class. Compare that to $20/unit at a CC.

Mix it up and take a few classes at UC? Better yet, get on track to transfer using a TAG agreement to a UC, that way, if you don't get into pharmacy school...you'll be on track to earn a B.S....and you can reapply once you get it (or sooner).
