I'm doing some research this summer and my question is does it look better if I enroll in an independent study course to do research or can I just do research without any official record and be ok to put it on med school app.

My guess is it should be better to be enrolled in a course (UC 199) but I wanna know if theres a major difference because I dont wanna pay some hefty summer school fee to do some research. Thanks for any response.

No major difference. If you need the credits, take the course. If you don't, then just do the research. The experience you'll gain is the key.

Taking the course is an easy way to pad the GPA and get research experience. It's also an expensive way to pad the GPA and get research experience.

Like zipmedic says, either way works just fine.
