Hi guys,
Just looking for some advice. I am looking to match ophthalmology in a bigger city /state w/ a lot of programs near by. I am a third year student getting ready to apply for my aways and I want to maximize my chances at getting into the best school possible in a bigger city. Specifically, I was looking at programs in California, Chicago, Texas, Michigan, Boston, Washington DC areas. I got a 239 on step 1, and may or may not be AOA (too close to call right now) I have 1 2nd author nonoptho publication and am currently working on research at my school in optho. I know I am not the strongest applicant, are there any programs I would be competitive for in these areas that I should consider doing an away at? I don't want to waste my time for a month at UCLA if they are never going to look at my app. Just trying to be realistic :angelic:. Also, is there any good way to research what programs you are competitive for aside from visiting each schools website individually and word of mouth?

i am interested in this as well. I am from california but am currently going to school out of state

I did an away at UTSW in Dallas. While I received valuable education, I didn't receive an interview. Had a 241 step 1 and not AOA if that helps. From your stats I think Chicago and DC area would be best bet.

Did you end up getting + using a letter from your away, or otherwise using the experience to your advantage during the application process?

I couldn't get a letter bc my CAS was already completed and you can't add letters once it is submitted.

But you can have a letter sent to certain programs if they allow it.
