I have a 4.0 in science and 3.6 overall. That's a big gap. Do schools overlook the overall GPA and focus on the science GPA? How about the top schools with hard requirements to filter out most of the applications? If the overall counts I am in trouble. If not I might have a shot...

you should be fine.

I'm guessing you only took the pre-reqs?

It was an engineering degree. But what is the weight of each gpa in the med school application process? Can I say 25% for the cumulative and 75% for the science one?

So my real GPA would be: 3.9 (very competitive)

Plus my 41 mcat i should be in good shape.

Note: I was joking about the mcat. hehehe

I'd say 50-50, or 60-40 (not sure which one is which), both are important. There are going to look at the total picture, so don't worry to much about it.

Te top schools, perhaps even the mid-tier ones, have to draw the line somewhere. They receive 5000 applications and interview 500 people. I would think they are hard filtering some of them by gpa and mcat. That's why I think 3.6 may get hard excluded, but not 3.8 or 3.9.

It is NOT the whole package. If you have an awesome application, perfect in everything but you show a 30 in your mcat, i am sure some school will simply eliminate you.

3.6 will NOT get a hard exclusion.
3.6 is just a little bit below the average for matriculants.

If you got a 41 on your MCAT, that should be able to get your app some closer attention. So if they take the time to look and see that all your B's were from engineering courses that only 5/100 people get an A in, then they may be more forgiving.
