"BIG NAME" Withdrawals???

Being obsessed about getting into Duke off the waitlist, I was just wondering how many applicants have withdrawn from a "big name" school thus far (Harvard, Hopkins, Duke, Penn, Columbia, Yale, etc.). It seems like these spots get held for much longer than spots at other, "less reputable" schools. Any such withdrawals to date? If not, what are your plans?
 
Holding acceptances to Harvard, Hopkins and Duke. Waitlisted at Columbia and Penn. Didn't apply to Yale (new haven's not for me). Pretty sure I'm turning em all down and reapplying if I don't get into Columbia. Firm believer that you should re-apply until you get into the school you absolutely want to go to. Of course I did not know where I wanted to go until after interviewing. Ah, c'est la vie. That's my plan. What about you? :wink: Peace.

I am sooooo glad that there is someone else in my situation! So frustrating to have all these schools knocking down my door. I'm like "jeez, leave me alone!"

In all seriousness, I don't think that people have dropped any of the top schools yet. harvard and yale havn't even had their second looks yet, and people are waiting for aid. give them two weeks and you will see things happening.
 
I withdrew from Duke MD, Wash U MSTP, and Penn MSTP...I'm holding onto UCSF to see if I get off the waitlist for MSTP, if I don't get it I'll withdraw from UCSF MD to go to UCSD MSTP.

Looks like I'm going to Duke Tommy, and I'm thrilled to go there, I love it, but my first choice is Penn. Unfortunately, I felt that was my worst interview and I got waitlisted tier 2, so I dont think I have a shot, but if I do get off in July, I'll be withdrawing from Duke.
 
Too bad Duke and Logan cant switch spots. thatd be perfect. Its obvious that they are both deserving!
 
withdrew from UCSF acceptance, withdrew from hopkins and duke after being waitlisted, and declined interviews at Harvard, Penn, Yale, WashU.

Not much help to you, other than to know that some people don't drag the process out for others if they find a place they like. 🙂

Withdrew from Duke. Withdrew from waitlist at Columbia, Yale, and WashU. Staying on waitlist at UCSF and Stanford...not sure how much longer I'll be on the Stanford list. I think I've narrowed it down to UCLA or UCSF.
 
Withdrawing from Columbia to go to Pitt. Most people think I am crazy for giving up such a big name school but I really liked Pitt better.

papasmurf: unless there are certain mitigating personal factors involved in the location of columbia, my friend, don't be an idiot. you have no idea which school is better for you yet- just because you clicked during an interview day doesn't mean jack. you mold into wherever you go. did you end up at the undergrad you wanted to go to? this could possibly be the stupidest premed move i've ever heard of. you are so sure that the educational experience at columbia is so superior to harvard that you would be willing to throw it all away? no offense dude, but i question your commitment to medicine and i'm sure the adcoms would to if you were to reapply.

I withdrew from WashU MSTP but I'm going to Duke so I can't help you there. Omores posted that they only accepted 170 this year and that ~40 have already withdrawn, so it's looking good. I guess serious movement will begin tomorrow. Good luck! hope to see you in August.

Uh sorry choker, GG16, and anyone else I managed to confuse. I'm a sarcastic mofo in real life. That whole post was meant to be sarcastic, and I thought it'd come off with the whole "drop everything and reapply if I don't get into Columbia" bit. Who in their right mind would actually do that? I even put one of these :wink: in at the end to indicate I was screwing around. Guess it didn't come off as such. Haha, I enjoyed reading your responses though. :wink:

Coalboy, I WISH I knew where I was on the list! I had heard that after the 15th they'll tell you whether you're in the top or bottom half of the list. But they never give out anyone's rank. A number of people have said that the waitlist typically has over 100 names on it. So based on trends from the past couple of years, the odds of getting into Duke off the waitlist aren't too good. Then again, this year has been very different for them, in terms of number of students interviewed, and number accepted (I've been told). So perhaps they'll take more off the waitlist this year...who knows.

Has anyone been brave enough to call and ask about their rank?
 
Withdrew from Pritzker, Northwestern, Stanford, and Hopkins (waitlist)...Stanford hurt the most though, man what a beautiful campus!!! But that alone wasn't enough to make me say no to Penn!
 
i haven't been brave enough. my student host said he didn't do a "damn" thing to get off the duke waitlist. all we can do is wait and pray.
 
Withdrew from Duke MSTP, Emory MSTP and Northwestern MD. Hope that this helps some people out. Hope to see some of you at Wash U next year.

Withdrew from UCLA, UCSD (I think that those count as "big name"... they were on my personal big name list when I applied 🙂 ), and UCSF (that last one really made my stomach hurt.)
