Hello there, everyone.

Where the hell did PIMP come from?

If anyone can kindly tell me how the word grew in popularity as the primary action verb to describe spontaneous verbal testing, I would be much obliged.

e.g., was there once a pimp who quizzed his hos a lot? I tried looking this up but to no avail.

pimp ( P ) Pronunciation Key (pmp)
n.
One who finds customers for a prostitute; a procurer.

intr.v. pimped, pimp·ing, pimps
To serve as a procurer of prostitutes.

I heard once that it stands for "Put In My Place", but I'm not sure I believe that.

This is all I can think of....

Yes, Pimp stands for "put in my place". When you undergo a true pimping session you will understand how fitting the abbreviation is...

On another note.

I went to Washington DC this past weekend, and I think there were pimps on our hotel floor. They had all kinds of cellular and electronic devices and PDAs (e-Pimp software, no doubt), and they were coordinating multiple activities in multiple rooms and talking about who owed who $260.00.

Needless to say, I'm not Priceline-ing anymore. Though it was quite an experience being present to witness the legend.

Like seeing a Unicorn. Or an Ewok.

My dad worked in the Oil Field (Louisiana side) for most of his adult life.

Granted he was cooking, but he hung out with rednecks and roustabouts.

At any rate, when I did work with him he'd sometimes say, "Ray, pimp the wrench."

What he wanted me to do was hold the wrench in contact with the bold or nut we were adjusting.

Just for extra, there's also a device called a "Cheater Pipe" or "Cheetah Pipe" depending on how you say it. A cheater pipe is a length of metal pipe put over the back of a standard sized wrench to increase the lever arm. It helps to loosen tight bolts and/or nuts.

There's my totally random post for the day! 🙄

The first time I heard it in the medical/scientific sense was about 8 years ago, when a classmate was talking about his mentor in his MS program, who would use him for his menial labors (like crap research and teaching his classes). That makes sense, since, beyond the purely sexual sense, there is an element of control and manipulation in the pimp/prostitute models. Certainly, when the superior is asking tough/narrow/specific/obscure questions, it's a control/humiliation scene.

It's not ETIOLOGY. You are meaning to use the word ETYMOLOGY, which means origin of a word. ETIOLOGY is a word that has to do with the causes of a certain disease. Lol..what a *******...

ahahah Nice.

Touche.

Etiology in its general sense means the study of the origin of anything; don't get thrown off thinking it just means the origin of disease - in medicine the latter is how it is used. It would indeed be more specific to use etymology though. You already know this distinction, I'm sure.

Hah, funny you should say that-- I was just thinking to myself, "hey, if rpkall were clever, he'd point out that he had used the word 'etiology' correctly, though a bit outside its traditional usage, and was trying to be cute with it seeing as how this is a med board and all." 😛

Sorry you weren't clever enough, rpkall. 😉 😀
