Big Robbins??????

Our school does fairly intensive pathology small groups (case presentations), so I found Robbins to be essential. Plus, it is a good book anyhow - worthy of keeping for a reference in my opinion.

my two cents...
don't buy it!!! I did...I tried....I failed (at reading it)
by the end of the course I was only reading picture captions and those purple boxes that are both included in little robbins
I also bought the question book for Robbins...and it is still sitting on my desk UNUSED
I may just be a slacker but I don't think any of my class used big robbins we can't ALL be slackers...most of them returned it very quickly if they bought it
BRS pathology was quite helpful as well

I will agree that it is the end all for reference books...so if you do have a lot of small groups or need that kind of reference at your fingertips 24/7 then enjoy the largest book on the planet

pathology??? you can't eat pathology....

ohhhhh, BIG ROBBINS....I thought we were talking about ice cream...silly me

We'll we've had path for a few weeks and it isn't that bad...I didn't purchase Robbins. I just bought Path Rapid Review by Goljan and the Robbins question book. I did the questions in the first chapter of the Robbins review book and they were pretty good although you can probably just do questions on webpath (it's free)..I didn't realize this until after purchased the question book. If I begin struggling, then I may check an older edition out at the library.

Does anyone know of a good path website where they have slides, etc with ARROWS pointing to the imp stuff??

Its HUGE...like Socrates...just kidding!

Big Robbins ... 👍

we basically have pathology during both preclinical years, b/c we are organ system based. so robbins is helpful. it is just way too big. i can't wait for baby robbins to come out. i don't bring robbins to school. i just log on to their online site (www.robbinspathology.com) at school. when u buy the book they give you some code to log in.

I used big Robbins for my pathology class and used it as a primary review source for the exam. I would not recommend it. It is great as a reference text but it is simply too much information to try to read through the appropriate chapters and retain the information, especialy if you get behind. Medium Robbins was used by most of my classmates and they seemed to like it. Baby Robbins is simply not enough information...

Big Robbins is a great intro/review text for first year of pathology residency, but I imagine it is a punishing overkill for all but the most compulsive and strident of med students. The website is damn fine, IMHO.

The question book (Robbins Review) is MONEY for pathology on Step 1, though. If you slug your way through it a couple of times you'll feel good about yourself.

the smaller robbins was more than sufficient for our path class, the path shelf, and step 1. hmm... i did not know there was a baby and a medium robbins. i assume i used medium robbins if this is the case b/c there was quite a lot of good info in there and it was a fairly thorough book. big robbins is available online for free, so i would suggest getting the smaller one and then supplementing with the online big robbins if you are just dying to learn more. the question book is really good, though i didn't have time to finish the whole thing.

What is the difference between medium and baby robbins?

how did you guys get robbins "free" online? friends give you a code?

The only way I got online was by buying the book myself, and entering the code that was inside the front cover. It's a one-time use code, is it not?

What exactly is "Big Robbins?" I see several Robbins books on Amazon, but I'm not sure which one you guys are talking about. Thanks!

I'm an M1 and they are really pushing the big Robbins. I got it and like it. In fact, I'm studying it right now! Of course, I love to have books. But I foresee that it will be a great reference and is a good investment.

I will NOT be taking it out of my house again though, I've seen smaller cars.

The Robbins I have is called "Basic Pathology".
I agree that the big Robbins is great, but I can't imagine having time to read the whole thing and trying to retain it. Basic Pathology is much more manageable if you actually plan to read most of it. Big Robbins would be a more complete reference book if that's what you are looking for. Anyway, that is just my 2 cents.
I am able to access big Robbins online through MD Consult.

My school was pushing us to buy Big Robbins...not sure why but the M2's said it would be worthwhile , so i got a used one.

I want to re-iterate this. That review book is probably the second most time-effective study tool I used for Step 1, only behind First Aid.

Big Robbins is pretty funny, if you actually sit down to read it. I'm a fan.

Hi there,
Big Robbins is a wonderful book for Pathology and beyond. When I took USMLE Step I, most of the photos came directly from this book. If purchase this book, it is very worthwhile to look at the pictures, figures and know the captions under the photos.

This book is available on-line under MDConsult. Your medical school may make a free subscription available for you (UVa does) so you can have access to it at any time. Some of the photos may not be available due t copyright laws but most are.

The Robbins Review is excellent for USMLE also.

njbmd 🙂

so the big one is Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease. can someone please list the names and/or links of the medium and baby ones? thanks!

Get the Big Robbins.... has more pics in there... You'll save that book and refer to it during your clinicals and during practice ( nine years difference between the 6th and 7th edition).

Robbins Review question book is awesome! Webpath bases their q's from there. Goljan originally wrote the questions for the first Robbins Review, and the new one that came out is not too much different at all..they added a couple more questions i think.

My boss, a psychiatrist, gave me the "big robbins" book as a going off to med school present. I don't think I'll be needing it much first year but will keep it and see how useful it is second year. I'll also be using it to gross out my friends...man, some of those pics are absolutely disgusting. Guess i'll have to get used to them.

is there a big difference between the 1st and 2nd (latest) editions of the Robbins question book? do i need to ditch the 1st ed for the 2nd?

u.

So get the big one? the medium one? the little one? Or a combination of 2? What would be best to get through path and then help for boards?

Some would disagree but big robbins is just that, too BIG. Memorize BRS path, pathophysiology for the boards and wards, and Goljan and you should be fine.

Disclaimer: I havent taken the boards yet. In fact, I'm just about to start 2nd year so take my advice with a grain of salt. G'luck!

I personally liked Big Robbins. I am MS IV, so I used the 6th ed.

Anywho, on those rare few times when I had time to the Robbins Review (question) book, I scored much higher. I guess if you can handle the review q's, you can take pretty much anything.

That being said, I think of BRS path as "must know" material (most people in my class used BRS). Then if you have time to supplement your BRS knowledge w/ Big Robbins, go for it.
