i am going to be scheduling aways soon for ophtho in hopes of getting a 2nd LOR from a big-wig in ophtho (any specialty)...i am an FMG and have already looked into a few of the top eye programs...harvard wants FMG to pay like 4k/month...hopkins doesn't allow FMG rotations...UMiami only allows observerships, meaning no LOR. i havent been able to contact someone from cleveland clinic or wills yet.

i am in NJ at the moment and was wondering if any of you guys knew another program from which a letter would look great and it takes FMGs...i was also hoping that the program was relatively close i.e. not on the west-coast.

moreover, do you guys know any big names that work close by and would be helpful with a LOR or rotation? i have noticed that most of the time, the big wigs names i got from people are not involved in directing clinical externships at all. if this is the case, how do i obtain a letter from them?

thanks for your time.

updated:

Iowa - must be LCME
Columbia - no rotation but observership

Hey, sorry for late response.

I don't know Hopkins general polices regarding IMGs, but our neuro-ophthalmologist, Dr. Neil Miller (one of the biggest-wigs in the field), frequently has international fellows rotating with him. You may want to inquire about setting up a rotation with his through neuro-ophthalmology department at Hopkins; info on the website- www.insidewilmer.jhu.edu .

Hope this helps!

I don't think there is official info on his rotations on the website; you need to contact his secretary or call neuro-op department for that info.
