Is talking about how in high school you wanted to get into your dream school but you were rejected because ur gpa was a little low a answer to this question,can that be a failure.then in college I can talk about how that incident made me get really good grades in college and I ended up with a 3.95 gpa?

They already know your academic background from your application, try to make it seem a little more personal. If not getting into your dream school changed you as a person then go for it, but otherwise I would go with something a little more impactful.

I got asked this question so be prepared. Your response can’t be as bad as mine because I messed up BIG TIME. I said my biggest failure was being a failure to my father. He always wanted me to become a doctor but I chose dentistry bc I thoroughly enjoyed it and see myself making a bigger impact in the field. Something along the lines of chasing my dreams and not trying to please him. This is common in Asian culture but the interviewer could’ve interpreted it as me saying the dental profession is a failure, which wasn’t my intention. I’ll let you know once I get my auto-rejection on dec 1st. Just make it personal and actually a failure. If your biggest failure is having a low gpa, you haven’t lived life lol

I found trying to be unique is not a big advantage. Being cliche is no problem unless your whole app is (mediocre stats, mediocre volunteering/leadership if any). It's like everyone who says a dentist/ortho changed their life. Not a deal breaker and if your stats and everything else is fine no problem. I always likened it to premeds saying "mommy had cancer and was saved so i wanna be a doc". They think it's unique when in fact a huge load of people had some doctor affect them in some way.

Everyone also always says "family time, liking art, business potential, life long learner, science" or some variation of those points in a "why dentistry" question. Again no problem- if 1000 people apply to a school unless you truly are unique in a relevant way, being cliche won't be a big deal at all.

Or the interviewer was simply miffed by lack of understanding that "doctor" is a title and not a profession.

dang did not realize this when I read his post. Yea the profs at my school always emphasize that we're doctors no matter what. I want to be called Dr. X but not called an actual doctor unless I'm in the clinic.
