Hey SDN!

I have an interesting decision coming up that I would love to hear your opinions on. My primary problem is that I did not take Biochemistry during my undergrad, a class that I am now discovering many schools require (good planning me!!!)

Luckily for me, both my state schools don't require Biochem (North Carolina resident, so UNC and ECU). Unfortunately for me, a ton of other schools do.

I could definitely go take Biochem this fall or next spring, but I live 45 minutes from Chapel Hill and can't seem to find any viable closer (or online) options. So I would either commute 4 days a week or move back to Chapel Hill (I went to UNC for undergrad) for one class, not to mention the $1700 price tag for the class itself.

So I am faced with either A) Applying to only a few schools, decreasing my chances of acceptance and maybe whiffing and having to wait a year or B) Spending some cash, taking biochemistry, and applying to a bunch of schools

Important info:

1) UNC is definitely my #1 choice and ECU is my #2 thus far (whole family in NC, dad recently having some health problems, sisters have young children I love to see, grandma 5 minutes away and I can help her out a lot, etc etc etc so I would really prefer to stay close to the fam)

2) Undergrad GPA is a ~3.3 overall, ~3.2 science. Applied Sciences major with a concentration in Biomedical Engineering, minor in Chemistry.

3) Lucked out on the DAT and squeeked a 24 AA, 23 TS, 23 PAT, plenty of random extracurriculars, just spent 3 months volunteering in Peru (~80 dental shadowing hours down here as well), blah blah blah

4) No idea if this is a pro or a con, but I am a pretty non traditional applicant and will definitely distinguish myself if I am fortunate enough to get an interview (though I have no idea whether it will be in a good way or bad way, HA). I mean we are talking random things like:

- Was a sponsored video game player (counter strike source for my curious fellow nerds) during college, got flown around the country with my team and put up in nice hotels to compete in tournaments.
- Have been a professional poker player for the last 6 years as my sole source of income.
- Been basically traveling throughout the USA and world the last 2 years and made it to a bunch of countries, ending now with my 3 month volunteer gig in Cuzco, Peru.

So I think interviewers will remember me, but whether it is fondly or with hatred is yet to be seen. I do have a real passion for dentistry, and I expect that will show in any interview that I am fortunate enough to have.

Holy long thread, sorry this is a novel. So basically I would love to hear what you guys/girls would do:

1) Take the gamble, apply to only 2-3 schools (my 2-3 top choices luckily) with a mediocre/semi-weird application and run this risk of whiffing and losing a year

2) Spend some cash, sign up for a semester of Biochem, apply to a bunch of schools and dramatically increase my chances of a Fall 2012 start date

To anyone that is still reading and awake, thanks for your time and advice! I have been wavering back and forth on the decision for a few months now and can't really figure out which one is better

PS - Go heels, elite 8 or bust baby

I would apply to more schools than less. If you only apply to a couple and don't get in, you will have to wait an entire year. I know its pricey to apply to a lot of schools, but how much is one year of your life worth to you? Not to mention the price of reapplying.

Dude that is some story of your's! I think it'll only help you out. A lot of people on here generally advise not to admit any gaming history, but competing in professional tournaments is definitely something to take note of! Being among the best CS players in the country def requires some manual dexterity haha.

As for the biochem, I think it'll ultimately boil down to how well you do in your interviews. Your GPA's are decent and you rocked the DAT, so I'd say you have a pretty good shot at getting interviews at both UNC and ECU. Given your history hopefully you perform well during the interviews and land acceptances to both. Your chances are pretty high I'd say. You're obviously a gambler, but if you're not a risk-taker (they're not necessarily synonymous mind you) I'd go ahead and take the Biochem course. Besides, it's only one course and assuming you do well, it'll boost your GPA that much more.

Good luck 👍

Wow really interesting story i must say, initialy seeing that as u put it "a novel" i almost pushed the back button and skiped the thread all together but im glad i didnt. I am very interested also to see what others have to say... Well im no advisor by any sort but i will give you my perspective on the issue. First off i feel your stats are solid especialy with such a high DAT score (i'm taking the DAT next month mabe you can give me some tips 😉 ) and you have pretty good EC's so i dont think youll lack in that department either, and from the sounds of it you will do pretty well on the interview. But heres my advice, im totaly in the same boat as you I am in need of taking anatomy and biochem and i also live 45 minutes away from my university (i live in florida and graduated from UNF) but the way i see it Dental school is super competative and every little bit counts when the slightest difference could be the deciding factor between aceptance and rejection. So hey ya it sucks and its gonna cost you, especialy with a raise in gas prices but hey the outcome will be well worth it. It never hurts to over acheive so i say go for it and suck it up now and take the class it will be worth it in the long run.

First off... very interesting stuff.... I imagine you played in Cal-i for CS, thats impressive.

Second of all, its a myth that MOST dental schools require biochem..... Most of them HIGHLY recommend biochem. There is a big difference between "require" vs "recommend"

Third of all, although you have an amazing application, I just can't get myself to agree with you applying to only 2-3 schools, with todays massive competition, thats just unwise.... you should aim at 8-10 schools.

Do a thorough search of some "safety" schools that are also known for being out-of-state friend that do not require biochem. Some that come to mind are Detroit Mercy, Temple, Nova, and I think Buffalo.... and I am sure there are plenty more.

First off, your life sounds awesome! As for your problem, I would compile a list of potential schools to apply to not based on the biochemistry requirement. Then review the list and include schools that do not require biochemistry if you so happened to pick all schools that require it. Then apply early, try to do all your interviews in the fall so that you can get an acceptance on December 1st. Hopefully you'll get into a school that doesn't require biochemistry, but if you do and it doesn't seem like a school that doesn't require biochemistry will accept you then sign up for that class to take in the spring. I think UF actually has an online biochemistry class so I would check that out too. Good luck. Awesome dat scores btw

Can you give us breakdown of your DAT?
How did you prepared for it?
BTW, I will go with #2 if I were you
Thanks

apply to 10+ schools. Then put biochem in your planned coursework section for the spring. if you ony get accepted to schools that require it, then take in the spring. if you get into one of your state schools then dont take it.
