I want to know if anyone here is involved in any competitive individual sports for which they train. I am hoping to continue training to race bikes but I want some input on those of you who train for marathons, bike racing and the like. I want to know how much time you spend working out etc.

thanks

You should write to Duane Haines @ U Mississippi…I know he is a big Bike Rider. http://cecr.umc.edu/faculty/haines.htm

I was training for a half marathon ( and possibly a marathon after that) until I tore a muscle in back playing flag football. If you're worried about having enough time to train, you can learn to make time. It might be rough when you are first starting out because things can be very overwhelming but if you stick to a regular workout schedule it'll provide a great way to clear you head and stay in control.

When I was training I would do hour long workouts (sometimes longer) during the week and then long ones on saturday or sunday. Though I'm only a 2nd year I know that finding time to workout can be more difficult in clinical years. Sometimes you go to work before dark and come home after dark, only to sit and study more. Other people I've talked with though have been succesful in working out during clinical years but I don't know about competitive training.

Lots of people find time to still compete in sports. Last weekend 5 people from my class competed in the NYC marathon. One girl from the class is a semi-pro runner and placed 34th, and she runns and wins a different running race every couple weeks. You have to be dedicated to stay competative but it is doable.

i race triathlons as a pro. train 15-25 hours/week. means compromises in all areas, but i get it done.
