Question is- what does it mean if a bateria is bile soluble? I'm looking at pg 144 of first aid 2011, the chart and it talks about alpha hemolytic bact- strep pneumo is bile soluble and viridens strep aren't. does it mean they die or something in bile?
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what "bile soluble" actually means, but it is good to remember that bacteria that are bile soluble are optochin sensitive...I just associate the two when it comes down to IDing G+ cocci

indeed. but 6.5% salt kills bovis. stupid fa...

but just think how awesome it will be next year when you have a colon cancer patient with a new murmur and you pump them full of 6.5% saline to cure them....oh wait, f!(k its useless

I'm almost certain half of this crap we learn about agar plating/hemolysis/etc is utterly useless in real life and we just run PCR on everything

I actually saw a Uworld Q that used the same "bile soluble" terminology and it confused me as well cos i havent read the micro yet and i thought it was just me.
