Binary Fission = Mitosis?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No. In binary fission, it is basically just the circular chromosome attaching to the plasma membrane and then it replicates and the cell pinches in half leaving two cells with one copy of chromosome. Mitosis involves the replication of individual chromosomes within a nucleus and proceeds through prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. And mitosis isn't the only part of eukaryotic cell division, it is just part of the cell cycle (G1, S phase, G2, then mitosis).

Great explanation...listen to this guy

Is binary fission in bacteria same as mitosis?

Maybe you are thinking Cytokinesis? It's the same after you get past how the genetic material is copied.

now i see the difference....thanks

now is "cleavage" same as cytokinesis?

Cytokinesis? It sure is. Here's a good picture of cleavage:

Here's another good picture of cleavage:

Sorry, I couldn't resist 😀
