Binding energy & Energy released?

E= mc2.

How can E represent the nuclear binding energy and also represent the energy liberated in a reaction?

E = binding energy = energy released??

I think the concept is that whatever matter is broken off (e.g fission or whatever) is the source of the energy. And since energy is conserved, whatever energy the matter had while it was bound is what it has when it is released.
