Biology Question #46.
The answer was analogous structures.

However, I thought parallel evolution is when two species diverge from a common ancestor, and then those two species evolve in a similar way parallel to each other afterwards. Since it's a common ancestor I thought it would be homologous.

I noticed the question states in separate lineages, but still does that no go against the definition of parallel evolution? Shouldn't it be called convergent evolution in the question.

Thanks

parallel evolution doesn't come from the same ancestors they just evolve similarly. The only ones that share the same common ancestor is divergent evolution because they start at the same place and evolve differently.

No, parallel evolution is when two species diverge from a common ancestor and evolve similarly. Divergent is the same, except they evolve differently.

Parallel evolution
Parallel evolution is sometimes difficult to distinguish from convergent evolution. Parallel evolution occurs when different species start with similar ancestral origins, then evolve similar traits over time. This kind of thing happens because the two different species, though they don't necessarily share a common ancestor, experience similar kinds of environmental pressures and survive only by undergoing similar adaptations. A classic example of parallel evolution is found among plants, in which several similar but distinct forms of leaf evolved in parallel and are evident today.

Describes two related species or two related lineages that have made similar evolutionary changes after their divergence from a common ancestor.

Parallel evolution is the development of a similar trait in related, but distinct, species descending from the same ancestor, but from different clades
