i took ap biology in high school and it was so long ago i hardly remember the subject. I did really well in high school and i think i can relearn the subject really quickly. I got a year before i take my oat so i have lots of time to brush up, whats the best way to relearn it all? i was thinking of getting an ap bio book and just reading it thoroughly, what do you guys think?

In terms of preparing for the OAT's, a good book (which i used for AP Bio also) is Cliffs AP Biology. It does a great job of covering the material and I have heard of multiple people using it to prepare for the OAT's bio section

Don't all of the schools require at least one college-level bio course (actually taken at a college)? I'm just curious about how you're getting by without taking it. I also liked the Cliffs AP review book when I took AP in college. I have an advanced degree in biology and to me, the biology on the OAT was definitely not higher-level than my high school AP class.

correct. AP classes do not count toward pre-reqs for opto.

Yea I'm not exactly sure where your getting your information from but my friend is currently applying and has ap credits for intro bio. I spoke to my pre-health advisors at school and no one mentioned that I need to retake these intro classes.I'm not taking any upper level as of now because SUNY does not require microbiology but I may be taking it fall of senior year just in case I don't get in.

No need for the snarky tone, surfer. We are all just trying to help the poster.

Sorry if you thought I was snarky, I didn't mean to come off that way. I'm guessing the first line of my post is what gave you that impression but what I was really saying was really asking where did u guys get that information from because I have heard contradictory information.

I took AP in high school and I can tell you first hand that UIW, SUNY, NOVA, and UAB all could care less about AP. That didn't meet their requirements. I'm not sure of some of the others, but I know for a fact that when I applied last year, these schools required it. I don't mean to be rude by this next statement, but I suggest you contact the schools in which you're applying to and double check. You'd hate to get an interview etc, then not be allowed in because of something so simple.

Your not being rude at all, actually quite helpful. You got me pretty worried, what did SUNY tell you? that you need to take those courses? I scoured their website and it doesnt mention anything about AP credits, how do they expect people to know that information. I'll either email or call them today, going to be pretty upset if i need to take bio. My friend is in the joint degree program and she has the same AP bio credits as me and is currently applying, they never mentioned anything to her in her interviews or anything. Maybe because shes a bio major? not really sure. Need to call them and ill get back to you on their policy

Yea, definitely double check. Most admissions offices are more than happy to answer a few questions. Hell, I even got on a first name basis with several admissions counselors over my four years of undergrad.

About your friend-- at most schools, taking an upper-level bio class will be an accepted substitute for an intro-level bio class. (I think this goes for many of the pre-req classes.) Good luck!
