Multicellular organisms are always composed of many small cells rather than fewer large cells. As a cell’s surface area increases by the square of its linear dimension, its volume increases by the cube of its linear dimension. Which statement is true about how cellular functions would be directly affected in a cell that grew too large?

A. The rate of membrane transport could not keep up with the needs of the cell.
B. The distances to be traveled by molecules within the cell would make metabolic functions inefficient.
C. Both A and B.
D. Neither A nor B.

Answer.

Wrote, realized answer to my question. Enjoy anyway.

I didn't understand why B is an answer because the cell can easily adapt to changes such as making more enzyme or making more mitochondria. But the realization is that i'm supposed to assume that everything stays the same while volume increases.

I was less sure that A was an answer, but B makes sense to me. I don't think the cell could just make more organelles.. Wouldn't there need to be a genetic mutation for cells of all types to suddenly start making more organelles and stuff?
