What's the difference between apocrine and merocrine glands? From what I've read apocrine glands secrete their products through pieces of the plasma membrane budding off and merocrine cells secrete their products through exocytosis. Aren't those the same thing?

I haven't come across a question like that on any bio material that I've been studying, so I'm not sure if the DAT will be going as in depth as this...if there are questions like that, then I'm screwed.

I'm pretty sure they both secrete via exocytosis but that probably isn't important... Just remember aprocrine secretes into hair follicle and merocrine directly onto skin. sweat from aprocrine gland contains more fatty acids then merocrine also so potentially if the sweat is trapped bacteria will degrade the fatty acids and create a rancid odour (bromhidrosis).

apocrine vs. eccrine- type of secretion

aprocrine- secretes fats and protein products (mammary gland is an example)

eccrine- secretes 99% water and 1% NaCl


merocrine vs. holocrine- mode of secretion

holocrine- contents build up in gland and then rupture
(these glands must be continuously renewed bc it causes cell
death)

merocrine- constant release of contents outside the body
