I was wondering, how bad does it look on one's transcript if they get a B in Bio111? Its not my fault for getting a B, the professor just came from Italy and doesnt know what goes where in college. All in all, I am very good in bio and chem, but it seems like i cant prevent getting a B in the class because everytime she gives an exam there are questions so poorly worded that any student would argue that it isnt valid.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks

Please dont use these esoteric course numbers. Just tell us the title of the course "Biochemistry, Cell Biology". I bet 90% of this board has no clue what "Bio 111" is. This goes for everyone else thats asks "should i take this or that course", then goes on to list the class by the schools proprietary naming system.

Extemely detrimental. You should consider a career in sanitation. Of course it's the professor's fault.
🙄

Ok I was unaware of the "call signs".
Its intro bio...bio111, what else could it be? jeez

Whats up with the tude? At UC Berkeley, Bio 1 is intro bio. Bio 111 would be an advanced bio course. No help for you from me.

Sorry, didnt mean to....bad habit

I read your applicant profile...very very encouraging. Congrats with everything and good luck 😳)

ok 😀 now you get help. or at least my opinion.

If everyone is subjected to the same test, and the class is curved, then there really isnt any disadvantage to having unintelligible tests. The rest of your classmates are in the same situation as you. If you feel it is that big of a problem, you can petition the school. If its really that bad, I'm sure you can get plenty of classmates to petition.

That said, one B isnt going to affect your application, nor one C, or maybe even a D. Just get your B and do well in your other classes. If you stress this much about one class it'll be hard to make it through the process intact!

Okay....here's the deal... please chill out. You are crying in your soup over a B... ha ha.. I'm sure there are plenty pre-meds, including myself that are laughing. Maybe my C in ochem, or C in genetics is something to be a little concerned about. Get over it... are you a sophomore??? You'll be fine. Don't blame it on the teacher.. that's too easy. Next time you take a bio class, go to office hours, find a study group, listen to recorded lectures, etc. and a B won't even be in your realm. If we all knew how to study and get straight A'swhen we first arrived at college, all pre-meds would be 4.0 students. However, things like beer and LIFE tend to get in our way occasionally .. and thank god they do or else our profession would be full of THE biggest dorks in the whole world!! 🙂

But seriously, you'll be fine. A B won't ruin your career. However, all B's will. You're going to be great, good luck.... and ace the final.

Just kick ass in the MCAT Bio. That's always a good way to put a relatively "not so great" grade in perspective.

Christine

Let this be a note to everyone else who asks about a B. Christine knows best. 🙂

ahh i love life and beer by the way.
that is all.

Nope, it isn't gonna matter. Getting a B will be fine. Relax. 🙂 Intro bio is tough. I thought my bio tests, when i took intro, were crap too. Those tests i took in intro were way harder, format and question-wise than the tests i've taken in upper div bio classes. Just try to learn the material as best you can. Intro bio was a hugely time consuming class for me, but the time I put in paid off. Don't blame the prof though. Good luck!

Its not my fault for getting a B

So is no one getting an A in that class? The highest grade in the class is a B? If so, its not a problem and wont be when you take the MCAT.

If other people are getting A's under similar circumstances as you are, then its not her fault, its yours. Grading is all relative, and at the point at which you absolve yourself of all blame, you have already resigned yourself to a lower grade.

But if you want, you can write your AMCAS essay on how you got a B and how its not your fault.

Very true...Its time to start taking responsiblity for your own actions, and grades are definitely all up to you. If you can do better, then do better. If you are satisfied with how you are doing, keep it up. The last thing you want to do, however, is to tell the adcoms that your teacher, school, life, etc. was unfair to you, because it will not help your case.

Thanks for the words of advice...I really appreciate it.
But on a side note...the highest grade on a test, lab practical, or quiz was always lower than 70. There would be a curve added and then everyone would get a B, no A's at all.
BUt thats a side note.....ok thanks again everyone I really do appreciate the advice and encouragement.🙂

Well, if the highest grade anyone is getting is a B, then it doesnt matter. But what I dont understand is that a "curve" should give some people A's. Either a test is purely graded (% correct) or graded on a curve, as most classes seem to be the latter. So why would anyone curve a test only up to a B?

Also, in the few classes where I have heard of a similar dilemma, are you sure they're not just going to curve up to an A once ALL grades are in (ie for the final grade?)

a "curve" is standardized. That means no matter what a certain number are going to get A's, usually those one standard deviation above the mean, or 16.7% of the class. If the highest grade is a B, then there is no curve. Since you said noone gest above a 70, and people get B's, then the class is either curved, or is scaled to some degree. I'm inclined to say that the class is curved. Maybe you just dont know anyone that got an a, after all, only 16.7% of the class gets A's. Its quite possible you dont know any of them.

enough making excuses, what you make is what you make, dont care about the rest of the class, i was in that same mentality my freshman year, break it =o.
