Hey guys,
I am starting med school next fall, and I have already taken a semester of biochem in school. I was wondering if I should take the second semester of biochem or not. Would it be helpful to do so? I am considering taking anatomy and immuno instead of bioc. I might be able to accommodate all three but I am not sure 🙁. In other words, how much biochem should I know before starting med school?

Most people will tell you to take it easy your last semester and not to take any hard classes you don't have to take. However, I found second semester of biochem to be extremely helpful in med school. Most of my grades are about average, but my biochem avg is significantly above average. I think that is in part due to the extra biochem I took in undergrad.

Don't overload yourself though. It's not worth it.

Man I'm tired of this question over and over and over... (note OP has 2 total posts as of this reply).

Don't take it.

And use the search function.

consider taking the immuno and anatomy, since you've already had at least one semester of biochem. as for the take it easy advice, not sure about that, personally. the more you're exposed to something (even at a lesser detailed/volume level) the easier it'll be in med school. that's important in my book.

I think the things we covered during second term were a lot higher yield than what was covered first term. I for one, am glad I took biochem, cell bio, immunology, etc. Now I don't have to worry about the basics, and can focus on the different emphasis put on our classes.

I'm glad that I had all my background, too, because I studied less than my classmates. I just didn't do any better in the long run.

We don't know what is in the OP's second semester. If it is heavy on molecular biology, then I wouldn't bother. Get the pathways in one time around for exposure purposes.

I wouldn't worry about "high yield" just yet. Plenty of time to get med school material in during med school.

Biochem I was not helpful for me but Biochem II would have been (I did not take it). If you have to choose between anatomy and biochem II, take anatomy.
