hey all,

a few schools [ie UCLA, UMB, Tufts and Michigan] want Biochemistry as a prereq now and ive asked ucla and umb already...they said they want the class as graded and non pass/fail.

I really dont want to take this class cause I hear its equivalent to stabbing yourself

Now the dilemma is Id love to go to any of these schools but what are my chances if I am out of state for all of the schools? Do you think I should take BCM and still apply..or not take BCM and not apply to these schools?

my gut feeling is to say yes and take the class.

any advice would be appreciated..thanks

I don't think in/out of state matters for Tufts since it is private. Also, I think if the school lists Biochem as a prereq, it's likely they will want to see it on your transcript already, or if you're lucky, maybe they'll admit you but on the condition that you take it before matriculation. I don't think Biochem is as waiverable as maybe English/Humanities. Just my opinion though...

I know Tufts requires it. Think of it this way though, you will be taking difficult classes in D school anyway, even biochemistry. You might as well take it, work hard and learn a lot so you will be well prepared at any school. I would rather suffer through it in undergrad with a more manageable workload and have a somewhat solid background of the material, than take it for the first time in dental school when you are already swamped with other classes.

Omg, check out what michigan requires!!!!

Microbiology
Biochemistry
Psychology
Sociology

this is nuts, yeh I am scratching michigan from my 2009 list lol

I think for most majors, especially scienced based majors, those classes are all required anyways. If you are a bio major you will definitely take micro and usually biochem. But I also took sociology and psych as pre-req courses. I'm not sure if its like that everywhere but taking social science classes looks good because it shows you recieved a well-rounded education.

i thought all those classes were just regular classes everyone has to take??

Biochemistry really isn't that bad. And besides, by choosing to go to dental school you supposedly like that type of stuff...right?

Once you start dental school you will be taking biochemistry courses anyway, so it's not a bad idea to study hard and learn the basics in an "intro" course before starting d-school, not to mention it is a pre-req for some of the schools you are interested in attending.

edit because my computer is slow

stabbing your self is right! Im taking it now and oh man! What a kick in the nuts..

I'm taking it now and i find it to be completely unenjoyable. I would recommend you put on your application that you will take it fall or spring of your application year. If you take it before then it may be detrimental to your BCP and overall GPA.

That said, any SDN'ers taking it that will be willing the share resources PM me (im using Lehninger 4ed.)😀

the wounds from the year of ochem kind of desensitize you. the stabs from biochemistry now are much easier to take.....they're more like jabs then stabs now.....
