So my friend is a nontrad trying to apply in the upcoming cycle. She has had a previous bachelor's and took the prereqs at a cc. She's gotten a 4.0 gpa in her cc post-bacc coursework, good EC's, research, EMT, etc, and about to take the mcat.
Thing is, she is concerned about the cc coursework, and wondered if she should take biochem at a 4year college this summer and show adcoms she could do well in an advanced bio class at a 4year college also (assuming she gets an A also).
Question: since the biochem course is a summer course, and grades won't be released until august, will it not make a difference if she sent in her primary before she got her grade? Or should she take the course and wait until after her grades are released to submit her app? I guess august isn't too late but that would impact her app in some way still, no?

What would you guys do? Take the biochem and apply after? Or just apply as early as possible without it?

August is late. Apply as close to June 1 as possible.

You can mark biochem as a course in progress when you apply, and send an update with the transcript. Can she take more than just biochem? Maybe genetics too?

Note that cumulative GPA, including all college classes including CC prereqs, is very important. Your friend isn't "a 4.0" for med school admissions, if the previous coursework wasn't 4.0. Not to say the recent 4.0 work isn't good.

Best of luck to her.

Thanks for the advice. She didn't do so well at her undergrad (she went to art school) but she did do very well in all the science prereqs (and other science courses) she took post-bacc. I will advise to go push through with biochem and consider another adv level class as well, and include those in her apps. Thanks again, much appreciated!
