I haven't taken biochemistry and I'm applying to some schools that require or recommend a semester/ year of biochemistry. Is it necessary to take biochem with lab or the lecture would suffice?

I havent heard of any schools requiring Biochem, but I have heard of recommendations. I would recommend not taking the lab unless you're thinking of going into research as a career. While the lab is generally a semester long project purifying a protein and is fairly easy, it will require extra time that you could be devoting to studying

exactly, unless your top choice requires it I wouldnt bother taking the lab

As a biochem major I can tell you that the lab class itself shouldnt be a problem and hopefully be straight forward. The lecture will deserve alot of attention since there is alot of information to be memorized. If you feel up to the challenge and/or have good time management skills then take the lab, its something new to experience, however boring it maybe to purify a protein. If you just need biochem for a requirement then just take the lecture, you'll have more than enough material to look over, though it sounds alot harder than it really is. Atleast thats what I thought.

Some do...U of Michigan, U of Nebraska, U of Minnesota...just a few examples.

I don't believe biochem lab is ever required, and don't know if it's "recommended" anywhere.

At my school (MSU), biochem lab is the hardest course of the major, and the reason I'm a Microbiology major. It sucked the life out of many of my friends; they slept an average of 3-4 hours a night the semester they took it. I don't know why it is so hard here, but it is definately not friendly to those not considering PhD Biochem.

i just had a question...

which is better a one semester biochem course or a year long bio chem class. They offer both of these at cornell and i was wondering whether any of you had any inputs on this.
