Is it necessary to have taken Biochem prior to entry into dental school? I have not taken it and just planned on reading and old Biochem book a friend gave me for some exposure. Any thoughts?
It's not required by most places, however it is recommended quite strongly. Having spoken to dental students, most say that having had it in undergrad was definitely a plus.
for me...biochem took everything i learned in all my undergrad science classes and made everything make sense. i say take it. and take it before you take your dats. it will make studying easier for the other subjects like bio and both chems. good luck

While it might be somewhat of a benefit it is not necessary. A lot of the biochemistry that you will be taught in dental school is either directly or indirectly (e.g. systemic issues) focused on the human oral cavity - a topic that most undergraduate courses don't address. A lot of my classmates that had taken biochemstry said that the majority of the material we were exposed to was new to them as well - in fact I believe this last statement can be applied to a lot of the course material that you'll encounter in dental school.
